Biana's soft voice cut through the tense silence, "You love her, don't you, Keefe?"
Keefe's eyes narrowed, his defenses on high alert. "What are you talking about, Biana?"
Fitz leaned forward, his expression serious. "You're crying Keefe. We've seen the way you look at her, Keefe. We can tell how much she means to you."
Keefe's face twisted in a mixture of frustration and desperation. "You don't understand. I'm just... concerned about her. That's all."
Biana's gaze never wavered. "Keefe, we're your friends. We've been through too much together. Don't shut us out."
Keefe's mask began to slip, his voice trembling, his body shaking. "You don't get it. If anything happens to her... I won't survive it."
Fitz's voice was gentle. "That's exactly why we need to talk about this, Keefe."
The words spilled out of Keefe like a dam breaking, tears coating each word. "Fine! Yes, I love her. Okay? I love Sophie. I love her so much it's killing me."
He looked up at his best friends, tears gushing from his eyes. "She never knew..and now I'm afraid she might never get the chance to kno.." He broke off as a sob escaped his mouth. He became a sobbing, uncontrollable mess.
Biana's eyes filled with tears as she wrapped Keefe in a warm hug. "We're here for you, Keefe. We'll face it together."
Fitz joined the hug, his voice filled with emotion. "You're not alone, Keefe."
***AFTER A WHILE******
Fitz shifted uncomfortably in his chair, breaking the silence. "We should get back to the others. Our parents are probably frantic with worry."
Biana nodded, standing up. "You're right. We should—"
"I'll stay here," Keefe said abruptly, not looking up.
Biana's brow furrowed. "Keefe, you need to take care of yourself too."
"I will. Just... give me a minute, okay?"
Fitz and Biana exchanged concerned glances but left without pressing the issue.
As the door closed behind them, Keefe let out a shaky breath. He thought he'd composed himself after the confession but the moment he was alone, the dam broke again. Tears streamed down his face, and he buried his head in his hands.
Why did Sophie have to go through so much? Why did he have to constantly fear losing her?
The door creaked open, and Keefe swiftly wiped his face, expecting Fitz or Biana to have returned. But it was Sophie herself, pale and weak with her legs trembling with the effort, leaning on cane for support.
"Hey," she whispered, eyes locking onto his.
Keefe's heart skipped a beat. "Hey Foster! Looks like you really fostered it this time!" he replied, forcing a smile.
Sophie's gaze narrowed. "You've been crying."
Keefe's denial died on his lips as Sophie's eyes filled with tears.
"Don't lie to me, Keefe," she whispered, her voice trembling. "I know you too well."
Keefe's mask crumbled, and he looked away, trying to compose himself. But Sophie's fragile voice drew him back.
"Keefe, please... don't hide from me. I need to know you're okay."
He took a deep breath and met her gaze, his eyes welling up again. "I'm just so scared, Sophie. Every time... I think I'm going to lose you."
Sophie's face contorted in a mixture of pain and emotion. She pushed off the doorframe and took a step closer, her eyes never leaving Keefe's.
---
Sophie's eyes seemed to bore into his soul, as if searching for something. Keefe's heart raced, unsure what she'd find.
"Keefe, I..." Sophie's voice trailed off, her gaze drifting to the floor.
Keefe's mind filled with worst-case scenarios. Was she going to push him away? He bet she was confused why he was crying over her.
But then, Sophie's eyes locked back onto his, a faint smile on her lips. "Oh Keefe, I'm glad you're scared."
Keefe's brow furrowed, confusion etched on his face. "What do you mean?"
Sophie's smile grew, her voice barely above a whisper. "It means you care. You care enough to be scared."
Keefe's expression softened, his eyes searching Sophie's face. "Of course I care, Sophie. You know that."
Sophie's smile faltered, and she took another step closer. "I know you do, Keefe. But hearing you say it... it means everything."
The space between them dissolved, and Sophie's hand brushed against Keefe's. The touch sent shivers down his spine.
" Sophie, I—"
"Don't," she whispered, placing a finger on his lips. "Just be here with me, okay?"
Keefe nodded, his heart pounding. They stood there, hands touching, the tension between them palpable.
Fitz's voice echoed from outside the room, "Sophie? Are you—"
Sophie's finger slipped from Keefe's lips, and she turned toward the door. "In here, Fitz."
Fitz entered, his eyes scanning the room. "Hey, Keefe. Thought you could use some company."
Biana trailed behind, her gaze flicking between Sophie and Keefe. "We brought food. Thought you two could use some.
As the four of them ate and tried to chat like everything was normal, Keefe and Sophie kept very close to each other, not wanting to let go of the other. Later, when everyone was gone and Keefe was lying with Sophie, asleep with his head on her shoulder. Sophie looked over at him, smiling and said,
"I love you too Keefe, I know you didn't say it but you didn't have to. I know you too well for that"
With that, Sophie too fell asleep.
