The car stops and Bruce quickly grabs his suitcase, almost knocking it off the edge of the trunk. He sees his sister running towards him and they embrace in a hug.
"I expect a ton of pictures when you come back, big face!" Amy exclaims, crossing her arms.
Bruce chuckles, pulling away from the hug to look at his sister. "Of course, Rat. I'll send you pictures from every corner of the world," he promises with a smile. Amy grins back at him, her eyes shimmering with unshed tears.
"Just be safe out there, okay? And remember to call me whenever you can," she says, her voice filled with emotion. Bruce nods, feeling a lump form in his throat at the thought of leaving his sister behind.
"I will, Amy. I'll miss you," he replies softly, giving her one last tight hug before heading towards the camp entrance. As he looks back one final time, he sees Amy waving at him with a watery smile, he understands that saying goodbye to his parents wasn't really an option, given their decision to leave in the first place.
Walking through the camp entrance, Bruce takes a deep breath, steeling himself for the adventure that lay ahead. The sun beat down on him, casting long shadows across the dusty path that led further into the camp. In the distance, he could make out small cabins, As he turned his head to look behind him, he caught sight of his lifelong best friend, Finney.
Finney lounged against the trunk of an ancient oak tree, fiddling with the wires of his headphones plugged into his ears. Bruce couldn't help but smile as he made his way over to him."Couldn't resist saying goodbye, huh?" Bruce teased as he approached Finney."You know me too well," Finney replied with a chuckle. The two friends stood in comfortable silence for a moment, taking in the sights and sounds of the camp.
"So, you ready for this adventure of a lifetime?" Finney asked, nudging Bruce playfully.
Bruce took a moment to look around at the towering trees, the chirping birds, and the rustling leaves. He felt a surge of excitement mixed with a hint of nervousness.
Bruce nodded, his heart pounding with anticipation. Together, they set off towards the cabins, their footsteps crunching on the gravel path. The camp was abuzz with activity as other teenagers prepared for their own trips into the wilderness.
As they approached their cabin, Bruce and Finney were met by their guide, a rugged man with weathered skin and a twinkle in his eye.
"Welcome, gentlemen- and gentle-women," he said in a unreadable voice. "I'm Hank, your guide for this expedition!!"
"Hank, your words are making you sound incredibly foolish I must admit, I'm feeling secondhand embarrassment."
Hank playfully folds his arms and gestures to the boy next to him, who stands only slightly taller than an ant. "And this," he says with a smirk, "is our fellow camp counselor Lance"
Lance greets the new campers with a small, sarcastic wave as he introduces himself to them. As Lance introduces himself with a smirk, the campers exchange curious glances. It was clear that Hank and Lance had a dynamic that was both playful and competitive.
Bruce couldn't help but wonder how these two would guide them through their expedition.
Hank clapped his hands together, breaking the moment of silence. "Alright, gather around everyone! We have an exciting adventure ahead of us," he announced, his voice exuding enthusiasm.
"Great, a comedian and a joker. Just what we needed," Bruce mutters under his breath to Finney, who stifles a laugh. Hank overhears and winks at Bruce before motioning for them to follow him during the sitting areas outside.
"Alright, listen up, you youngsters," Hank begins, clapping his hands for attention. "We've got a week-long trek through the wilderness ahead of us. We'll be camping under the stars, cooking our own food, and navigating through some rough terrain. But I promise you, it'll be an experience you won't soon forget. So without further or do there are papers posted up against the billboards just find your name and your cabins!"
Bruce and Finney scanned the bulletin board, searching for their names among the list of assigned cabins. Finally, Bruce spotted their names on a piece of paper tacked under Cabin 7. Excitement bubbled in his chest as he and Finney exchanged grins before grabbing their bags and heading towards their temporary home in the wilderness.
Cabin 7 stood nestled amidst a cluster of tall pine trees, the late afternoon sun casting a warm golden glow over the wooden structure. As they pushed open the creaky door, a rush of musty air greeted them along with the sight of several bunk beds lining the walls.
"Home sweet home," Finney quipped, dropping his bag onto an empty bunk.
Bruce chuckled and claimed the bunk next to Finney's, feeling a wave of gratitude for having his best friend by his side on this adventure. They unpacked their belongings and organizing their supplies for the journey ahead.
Two boys suddenly burst into the room and freeze in shock as they see Finney and Bruce.
"Who are you guys?" one of the boys demanded, eyeing Bruce and Finney suspiciously. The other boy shifted uncomfortably beside him, clearly unsure of how to handle the unexpected guests in their cabin.
"I'm Bruce, and this is my friend Finney. We're assigned to Cabin 7," Bruce replied, trying to diffuse the tension that hung in the air.
"That makes sense now! I'm Griffin, and this is Billy."
Griffin and Billy stood there, their hands still intertwined as they introduced themselves. Bruce and Finney exchanged awkward glances before Bruce spoke up. "I'm Bruce, and this is my friend Finney."
"We were just unpacking and getting settled in," Finney chimed in, trying to break the ice. "If you guys need any help finding your bunks or organizing your stuff, just let us know."
Griffin and Billy exchanged glances before nodding appreciatively. "Thanks, that'd be great," Billy said with a shy smile.
