He couldn't concentrate. His pen kept tapping against the open notepad, but the pages were blank, as he struggled to find the right words to put together to write the History paper that Alaric had assigned his class. He had meant to be writing an essay on the French Revolution and he had the right textbooks open and he knew all the right answers, but Louis still couldn't think. Lily and Kol were all he could think about and knowing that she wasn't even here in Mystic Falls caused an unsettled pit to form in the bottom of his stomach, knowing that she was hurting as much as she was. The difference was that she had a future ahead of her with the soulmate she apparently did not want while Louis had no idea what he was meant to do.

He had known that he was not going to end up with Lily forever, and he had known that their relationship was not going to last simply because something inside had told him so. But now knowing that it was actually true, that he was no longer with the girl who still owned his heart, hurt more than he ever thought it would. He had thought that he could a few years of happiness before reality truly came to bite him in the backside—that was obviously asking for too much. Kol Mikaelson was destined to be with Lily Prince. The thought angered him. He was never one to allow his fury to take control, as he was always better at controlling his emotions than his brother and sister had been. The problem was that Kol brought that out of him. He didn't deserve Lily. Louis felt that as the person that loved her, as the person that had imagined a future with her, he deserved to judge the inevitable relationship between the soulmates. Kol was a bad person. Lily had told him as such and he hated the idea of something happening to the girl that was no longer his.

Finally deciding that he was never going to be able to work while Lily and Kol were on his mind, Louis slammed his textbook shut and tossed the pen across the desk, pushing himself back against his swirly chair, sighing heavily as he did. He could hear his sister in the room beside his, which had belonged to Drew once before but he had since moved out, allowing Maggie to start to turn the room into a nursery for her baby. It was another reminder that Drew had left, that he was more than just his brother but now a friend of the Mikaelson family. Now that a majority of the Originals were gone, Drew had moved back into the mansion, once again showing that his loyalties were with the Original Hybrid.

Drew was gone but he was not gone. Lily was gone but she was not gone. They were here, walking around and he knew he would still see them often enough, but at the same time, he still felt empty. His brother was there when Louis had been thrown from that roof, and he knew that if he needed Lily, she would be there. Yet at the same, he knew things were still different. Lily was not just his girlfriend (or ex now) but his best friend and he didn't know how to think about her without feeling pained, let alone actually being able to look at her and have a functioning friendship with her now that she was tied to another soul. Drew was the person he had counted on the most outside of Maggie, and as much as he still cared about his friends and family, his growing respect for someone everyone else hated made him wonder what his older brother's life would be like in a century's time—when every human he had loved had since died.

He didn't want to sit around thinking about things he couldn't change so Louis threw on his denim jacket and left his room, not stopping as he passed his unborn niece or nephew's nursery, where Maggie was on the ground, contently and happily looking through a pile of onesies and baby socks, her legs spread out in front of her as she did. He got on his Mountain Bike and made his way down the street, his hands clenched around the handles of his bicycle. He wanted to do something—anything—to take his mind off the fact that his heart had gotten broken. He had not told his sister about what happened but he already knew Drew had known the truth, who happened to let him know that the news had been spread around their friends, meaning everyone but Maggie knew. And Louis had been one of the last to know, as well. It made him even angrier than he already was.
