The idea of "connecting" disparate subject areas is the foundation of the Elementary Montessori curriculum. The young learner is not just exposed to discrete facts. Rather, the curriculum caters to the child's interests through interdisciplinary, integrated, and convergent learning. Montessori materials provide opportunities for self-expression and unrestricted investigation, enabling kids to advance according to their abilities.

A classroom with children of different ages offers a non-competitive setting where children can grow in confidence and be challenged. They can work together with people of various ages and abilities because of the surroundings. Youngsters are encouraged to work both independently and in groups, which fosters critical thinking and efficient time management. Children are encouraged to share their thoughts, listen to others, and learn in groups.

Now is the time to continue developing these intellectual ideas while refining and expanding on the abilities that have already been started. Writing is encouraged in all subject areas and is incorporated into the curriculum to help children communicate their ideas. In elementary school, kids continue to refine their social skills and gain the capacity to understand complex ideas on a true intellectual level.

Through fresh insights into geography, biology, history, and the Montessori Five Great Lessons, the child starts to understand and appreciate the order of the universe. At this age, children have an innate curiosity about the cosmos and how they fit into the "Big picture." They are encouraged to investigate humanity, themselves, their relationship, and their place in the world through the curriculum.

"It is necessary, then, to give the child the possibility of developing according to the laws of his nature, so that he can become strong, and, having become strong, can do even more than we dared hope for him."

-Maria Montessori
