The first shift

I woke up to the sound of my alarm screeching at me, I turned over to see the clock which read '5:30am'. Today I start my intern year and I couldn't be more nervous.

I eventually roll myself out of bed and head over to my daughter, lillie, who is in her room letting out light snores as she sleeps. I go back to my room to get changed to let her sleep a bit longer before the nanny comes.

I knew beginning this that it wasn't going to be easy having a four year old and a full time job, but her father isn't in the picture anymore and I've always wanted to become a doctor. Once everything settles and I'm further into my intern year everything will be fine, I think.

I pull on a long sleeve dark green top along with my jeans. I go downstairs to make me and lillie breakfast and pour myself a cup of coffee.

I look at the time and decide I should wake lillie up as she will want to see me before my shift.

"Lils, wake up" I whisper quietly.

"Momma" she says along with a yawn.

"Come have breakfast with me before I start my shift" I say as I take her in my arms and carry her downstairs, placing her into her chair.

...

At 6:30 I wait for the nanny to arrive, it's very early but I told her the times before she begun so she could prepare. When the nanny eventually comes I wave goodbye to lillie and hop into my car and drive along the Seattle roads on my way to work.

...

I look at my watch and realise I'm running a bit late. I quickly jog into the hospital and make my way into the OR that all the interns were told to meet in.

As I open the door I hear the chief, Richard Webber, announcing his annual intern speech. Richard use to be close with my mum but doesn't know that she has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's and I'm hoping it stays that way.

After the speech was over we all make our way to the intern locker room. I choose a locker that is placed next to this other girls locker.

As we hear the other interns names being called I decide to speak up.

"Only six women out of twenty" I say to the Asian women with long black curly hair next to me.

"Yeah and I heard one of them a model. Seriously, that's gonna help with the respect thing?" She replies back rolling her eyes.

"I'm Cristina, Cristina Yang" she adds.

"Meredith" I reply, not wanting to include my surname just yet for a certain reason.

"So who did you get assigned with, I got the 'nazi' " she asks.

"Me too" I say, glad that I've already made a friend.

"You got the nazi? So did I! At least we will be tortured together right" a mousy voice says from opposite us.

"I'm George O'Malley"

I recognise him from the mixer, he was staring at me all evening, thought he was some kind of stalker.

"We met at the mixer, you had a black dress with uh- a slit up the side, strappy sandles-" he says trailing off as he realises we're about to burst out laughing at him.

"Now you think I'm gay- I'm not gay"

"Sure" Cristina replies sarcastically which makes me laugh.

I follow closely behind Cristina as George is still rambling beside me.

"O'Malley, Yang, grey, Steven's and Karev"

I hear our names being called and I realise. This is it. This is what I've been leading up to my whole life. I take a gulp and quickly follow to our resident along with the other four interns. The peppy blonde, mousy boy, Cristina and this other guy with a buzz cut who looks somewhat hot.
