A month passed.

Mackenzie settled into the group quite nicely. Buffy became so happy that the two of them came to town because Ezra would often offer to patrol for Buffy so she could actually have a life. He pitied the girl as he did not believe it was right to throw teenagers into a war.

And the war was certainly here in Sunnydale where the Hellmouth presided. There were plenty of vampires and monsters to be hunted. Ezra had plenty to do when darkness descended.

Kenzie still hadn't gone out with her friends at night. But she often had Buffy over to her house many times for sleepovers. They'd study or giggle over celebrity crushes. She had Willow over as well but she was a lot closer to Buffy; it had a lot to do with the fact that they weren't normal and they could relate to each other.

During school hours, Buffy sometimes trained with Ezra in the library as he was much more experienced and he had the strength to match hers. Giles thought training with him was a great idea. The Watcher knew all about Ezra.

"Of course. Of course. The line of the rogue Slayer," Giles said.

         "The what?" Buffy said cluelessly.

"There was a Slayer long ago that dabbled in magic," Giles explained. "She made it so every person of her bloodline would receive the strength and speed of a Slayer without actually being one. Of course, the Council did not like that as you can imagine. Very frowned upon. That's why she was labeled the Slayer who went rogue."

"What if they could be a Slayer?" Buffy asked. "I mean, can't I give my power away? Ezra wants it."

"It cannot be given to a male, Buffy."

        "Right," Buffy sighed.

Buffy was quite sad she couldn't give up being the Chosen One. But with Ezra trying to actually make sure the girl had a life, it more than made up for it. Buffy was grateful and she liked training with Ezra because it actually gave her a challenge.

But once training sessions ended in a broken table at the library, the sessions were moved. The house Ezra and Mackenzie lived in had a basement that was done up as a training room with weapons mounted on walls. So sometimes Buffy would train there while Mackenzie would watch and chuckle from time to time when Buffy would get the upper hand.

After training, Kenzie and Buffy would just hang out. They were very close and she'd even do homework for Buffy that the Slayer couldn't complete because of the responsibilities of being said Slayer.

Mackenzie and Ezra eventually learned of the one vampire Buffy would not slay. The vampire with a soul.

         Angel.

When Angel first met Mackenzie, he had to hide his face for a moment before it changed back to his normal human-looking one. Mackenzie had the sweetest scent of blood he'd ever smelt.

He elected to keep as much physical distance as possible between them because he didn't quite trust himself around her with blood that smelt so tempting. But he grew curious about the girl. He noticed one peculiar thing: her heartbeat was so slow he could barely hear it. It was probably only going around thirty beats in a minute. It was dangerously slow.

He had confronted her about it once. He had visited her in the night and stood on her balcony. She didn't invite him and then she noticed that he was waiting outside.

"Oh. Sorry. Kind of a habit. Dad taught me to never explicitly invite someone in, in case, you know..." she said before whispering like it was a secret. "It's a vampire."
