Lord Krishna was not an ordinary human being, but the supreme personality of godhead himself who descended on earth and was playing different roles in the dynasty at that time. For example the wife of Maharaja Pandu as well as the nephew of Pandava's mother Kunti.
In this way, as a relative and as a protector of the eternal religion, Lord Krishna was always on the side of the truthful sons of Pandu and protected them.
Now finally Duryodhana invited the Pandavas for the gamble of dice. In that gamble Duryodhana and his brothers take decisive contest and humiliated Sati Draupadi, the Pandava's Wife by trying to strip her naked in front of a Kings and Princes.
But if your faith are strong in the name of god and goddess then no one can hurting you badly or any kind of bad thing happened to you.
In that means then during that event Draupadi was protected by divine aid of Lord Krishna, but lost to the game of dice due to treachery. The Pandavas were deprived of their kingdom and exiled(Vanvaas) for thirteen years.
After returning from the 13 years of forest exile, the Pandavas rightfully demanded their kingdom back from Duryodhana but he refused to give it back. For serving the people of kingdom all Pandava were bound by duty to do acting as a kshatriya in charge of the administration. So finally they(Pandavas) asked only five villages and leaving the entire kingdom, but Duryodhana arrogantly replied that he would not give them even the small parts of the land.
Through all these incidents the Pandavas remained patient till now. But now war seemed inevitable for the Pandavas.
At that time some of the Kings were joined the side of Dhritarashtra Sons and while some of with the Pandavas, Lord Krishna himself assumed the role of the Pandava's messenger and went to the Raj Sabha of Dhritarashatra to advocate for peace. When his humble offer was not accepted then after War became Inevitable.
As a Lord Shri Krishna does not want to war and nor want to fight, but whoever wanted to use his army could do so. So this opportunity was took by Duryodhana and captured whole an armed army from Krishna, While the Pandavas were equally eager to accept Krishna themselves for their guide and helper.
Thus Lord Krishna became Arjuna's Charioteer and accepted the responsibility of driving the chariot of the famous Dhanurdhara.
And now we come to the scene from which THE BHAGAVAD GITA begins-the famous narrative dialogues between the Lord Krishna and his devotee Dhanurdhara Arjuna.
