Imagine that's you in the picture walking with Dylan O'brien...
---
It has been almost 9 years of marriage, after working together in Teen Wolf and The Maze Runner, me and Dylan continue to follow our careers with acting, together. I have never truly seen Dylan mad, that is until today, when he found out their daughters dance partner hadn't shown up for a recital.
"They've been practicing for five months and he doesn't show up for the recital?" Dylan started to pace, a handful of fingers shoving through his wind-blown hair, which still remained a bit spiky through the years, but more fluffy now. "How is she? Is she..." He waved his hands in a giant X. "Madeline, don't tell me shes crying."
They were outside the school auditorium in a huge group. Madeline, Dylan, Tyler, Kaya, Thomas, and the other Tyler, Tyler Posey. Dylan was raised perfectly, and I pray everyday that his mother and father are very blessed to have been born such an amazing person. A person who'd taken to parenting like he was born to be a girl dad.
Which was a very good thing, because they had three little girls.
Emory, the oldest at seven, Em for short.
Isabelle, the youngest at two, we named her after my role in the Maze Runner.
Both were currently home with a babysitter, the same home where Dylan and Madeline had a special night. They simply just added three more rooms to the house for their children. We had two big dogs, a Saint Bernard, and a Bernese Mountain dog. The saint bernard was named Saint, and the bernese mountain dog was named Charlie. Both dogs were amazingly sweet with the kids, and they added a bit more protection from the paparazzi. I try my best to cover the kids faces, but the paparazzi still have no boundaries, and always find a way.
Selena, their middle girl, was a very serious five and a half- tonight was her balle recital. Her older sister, Emory, wanted to be an actress, so we put her in acting classes. Dylan dedicated a lot of time to coaching her as best as he could. When Selena expressed an interest in dance, he was very adamant that he give the same level of attention to his middle daughters interests, so she wouldn't feel slighted. He might have stopped shy of aiding with the dance classes, but he'd ask so many questions at rehearsals that the teacher eventually started ignoring his raised hand.
"Naturally, she is a little upset, but we had some cookies and juice with the instructor, so shes gotten her courage back," Madeline said, laying a hand on Dylan's arm and drawing him close. "Shes okay. Its not ideal, but she can still do the dance without her partner."
"There's a dip during the second transition, Madeline." Dylan looked at her long and hard. "She can't dip herself."
My heart crawled up into my throat. "You know, shes going to get through this. It's going to be a good lesson. The paparazzi aren't here, which is great! Life gives us lemons sometimes--"
"No one gives my girls lemons," he said, visibly offended. "That goes double for you," he said, leaning down to kiss me. "No one better be giving you any lemons." His voice shook with a little bit of a tease. I smiled against his lips, "No one is giving me lemons." Her mouth seemed to be distracting him from the problem at hand. "You look insane tonight, you know that, right?" he said, in a lowered voice, his gaze traveling down the front of my burgundy silk wrap dress, his right hand lifting to squeeze my hip. "I was going to tell you when we arrived, but you sprung this whole missing partner on me. I just want to--"
"Seeing as though all our friends are here," I whispered, gesturing for him to keep his voice a bit lower, "...that might have to wait until later."
"You read my mind." He joked, pressing his lips to the center of my forehead, his arms wrapping around her in a bear hug. "How'd I get this lucky?" I took a deep inhale of his expensive pine cologne scent and for a moment, there was nothing and no one but the two of us. Looking back, nine years had gone by at speed of sound, and yet every moment was so vivid that she could replay them in slow motion. It was almost like living through those cherished memories twice. Years of hard work to get to where I am now, truly couldn't have been done with Dylan.
Funny, shed never fully envisioned herself as a mother. Not until she met someone who reminded her that she was fearless. Someone who imbued her with twice her strength, because they were a team. In everything. Made Madeline feel like such a vital part of a family that she started dreaming of expanding it. Dylan's response to her broaching the subject of having kids?
Darling, I thought you'd never ask.
We didn't come out of the bedroom for a solid forty-eight hours. He was truly an amazing, and kind person, the kindness and respect had tripled when we had kids. The paparazzi and social media has made it a little difficult for some privacy of our family, but other than the interviews, posts, photos, everything in the celebrity world, I couldn't do any of it without Dylan. And funny enough, Holland's career had quickly ended after the interview for being called out as a liar.
"Don't you think I should go and talk to her?" Dylan asked now as he smoothed my hair. "Or am I going to make it worse?"
I shook my head quickly. "No, you can go talk to her, I'm sure shed love the support." I said automatically. He dipped his head in a smile that was almost bashful. "You doing that thing where you rewind the past and get all sentimental and anxious on me?" I pressed my lips tightly and nodded. "Maybe."
Slowly, his smile gave away to a serious expression. "If I had one wish, it would be to go back in time and never had let you go in the first place." If he kept this up, I was either going to swoon or cry in front of their entire friend group. With a big inhale, I straightened the collar of his dress shirt. "Go talk to Selena. She needs you."
He studied my face for a long moment, as if memorizing every feature? Before finally striding away. I didnt know what made me follow, but I quickly hurried after him, glancing back at out friends as if saying 'Ill be right back.' She crept in his wake toward the stage entrance and peeked in through the crack of the door.
There was Selena, Dylan always said she was the spitting image of me at that age, sitting on Dylan's knee in her emerald green sequined dress and matching mini top hat. As I had feared, her lower lip was trembling again. As strong as my impulse was to enter the room and comfort my little girl, I remained in place. Dylan had this.
"You know what?" Dylan gave an exaggerated look over his shoulders. "That kid always had snot in his nose, anyway."
Selena giggle-sniffed.
"They'll say he has chicken pox, but we know the truth. He just couldn't keep up with you."
"No," said their daughter, always logical. "He could. It's prolly just chicken pox."
"If you say so," Dylan said skeptically, his dark brown eyes looking down at Selena with such love and comfort, it made my heart melt into a puddle of roses. "Here's what I know. I'm going to be sitting in the audience thinking about how brave you are. All of us. You're so brave, Selena. Just like your mom. Remember that story I told you when she put the mean woman in her place in front of millions of people?"
"Yeah."
"Remember when we were cleaning out the garage, and a huge rat was running around. I screamed like a little girl, but your mom didn't even flinch. You get your bravery from her." Selena was quiet for a long moment, her tiny throat muscles starting to strain. "Dad?"
"Yeah?"
"Do I have to be brave alone?"
"No, of course not," said Dylan with absolute no hesitation.
And that's how Dylan ended up dancing as Selenas partner in her recital, with a miniature green, sequined top hat pinned to his head, every move executed flawlessly. Of course people took many photos of Dylan O'brien dancing on stage with his daughter, yet another memory that I would replay again and again for the rest of our lives.
