How We Met

A few months into my new life, I found myself in a loop. For the first months of the year, I stayed with Amun and Kebi. They taught me how to drink blood without completely draining a human. They also helped me discover my powers and how to protect myself with these powers. Around the end of May, I moved in with the Cullens. Carlisle taught me how to fight and how to live among humans. He also taught me his practice. In Forks, he allowed me to work with him as his nurse in the hospital. This helped me with my interactions with humans. 

Every year for a decade, I'd been living a life similar to a child of divorce. Back and forth from Egypt to Forks and Forks to Egypt. Although it seems like a lot, it wasn't so bad. I'd get to go to Forks a few days after my birthday to spend time with the Cullens. Staying with the Cullens gave me a sense of home and normality. Living in Egypt with just Amun and Kebi made me feel like I was with my mom and dad. I was the only child with them for the first few years. Tia would visit us occasionally, but it was usually just me and my adoptive parents.  

During the second year of my new life, while with the Egyptian coven, I met a man. His name was Benjamin. He had the power to manipulate the elements. I was coming down the stairs when I heard voices. "Benjamin, my boy!", Amun said happily. "Hello, Amun. It is very good to see you. Kebi, have you been alright?", he greeted the couple. Tia smiled as she waited for her turn and then hugged them. "Oh, yes. We've been wondering when we'd see you again, dear.", Kebi said after hugging them both. "Ah. You know I've been traveling. I was waiting for a good time to surprise you guys. If I visited all the time, you wouldn't be as excited to see me.", he said playfully and winked at the couple. "Oh, hush. It is always a great pleasure to see you, son", Amun said putting his hand on Benjamin's shoulder. "Enough about us. Where is my Nour(Light)?", Tia asked. 

Everyone looked towards the stairs as I made my way to the bottom of the stairs. "Hi, Tia!", I said smiling. She walked over to me and gave me a big, tight hug. When she let go, I laughed as she fixed my hair. "There's someone you should meet!", she says as she grabs my hand. "Yes, dear. Come here.", Kebi says. Tia led me to where they were. Standing beside Kebi, Tia came behind me and rested her hands on my shoulders. "Cara, this is Benjamin. He is a part of our coven. Say hello, honey.", Amun said gesturing to Benjamin. "Ah. So, this is the newborn Tia hasn't shut up about? Hello, Cara.", he said and stood in front of me. "Hi.", I said as he took my hand in his and flipped it, so it was facing upwards. "Can I show you something?", he asked as he moved his hand. The water from the fountain had awoken and moved into my hand. He showed me a person and then a tornado before returning the water back. "Benjamin has the power to manipulate the four elements.", Amun said. I looked up and looked into his eyes. "That's a cool power, Benjamin.", I complimented. "Thank you very much.", he said smiling. 

"Why don't you show him yours, dear.", Kebi suggested. I obeyed and lifted my hand as he was picked up off the ground and floated in the air. "Woah.", he said trying to balance. I laughed as he floated around the room. I set him down in front of me. "Telekinesis. Very useful.", he said smiling at me. "That's not all! Show him, Cara.", Tia said. "Hold out your hands please.", I said to him. He did as I said, and I gently put my hands under his and held them. I breathed and used my powers. I showed him the day I learned what my powers were. It was a very vivid memory that made it feel like he was there. "Wow.", he said as he watched. While he was watching, I searched his brain for a memory to show him. I decided to use the day he discovered what his powers were to keep it neutral. I made sure not to pry or look at anything else. I have learned to concentrate enough to not invade one's privacy. 

After he watched my memory, I showed him his. He seemed to enjoy reliving this moment. Once the memory was over, I released his mind. He blinked a few times and looked at me with a big smile. "You're incredible. Amun has always had a gift for picking the right people for our coven.", he said. "Thank you. Those are my only powers. Telekinesis and memory manipulation.", I said as everyone beamed proudly at me. Tia smiled as she looked at our hands and then at Kebi with a playful look. That's when I realized we were still holding hands. I gently removed my hands and fixed my hair to hide my embarrassment. Thankful the attention moved from me.

Benjamin thought for a second and then asked. "Does the Volturi know?", he asked Amun. "Of course not! Aro would've tried to take her from us. No one knows about her but us and the Cullens. No one else.", he stated quite irritable. "Twins.", Benjamin said squeezing my hands and smiling. I smiled back at him.

Tia and Benjamin stayed with us for a while after that. I showed Benjamin how I died and the morning I woke up as a vampire and he showed me that we could still have fun in this life. I looked forward to seeing him every year after that. In January, when I'd come home to Amun and Kebi, Benjamin would also be there to greet me. We spent almost every day together during my time in Egypt. We had become very close to each other. He was my first kiss and my first love.

It was the night of my would-have-been 21st birthday and I'd spent the day being showered in love and celebration by the Egyptian coven. I spent the last few hours of my birthday on the roof of our house. It was a nice flat surface that made it easier to stay up there for a long time. I'd go up there when I needed to think or wanted to feel the cool air as I wrote in my journal. That day, I went up there to be alone. As I sat up there, I thought about my parents. I thought about how they felt when I didn't come home that night. About how they must feel waking up every day without their only child. I hoped that they'd find peace eventually and that they no longer suffered from losing me. After that, I took a deep breath and as I exhaled, I let go of all my sadness and worries for the night. 

When I opened my eyes, Benjamin was sitting beside me staring at me. I turned to face him and smiled. "Hi, Benji.", I said. "Hello, sweet girl.", he greeted back. "What were you thinking about just now?", he asked. "My family.", I replied and turned my head back to the buildings ahead. "Do you miss them? Would you like to tell me about them?", he asked. I smiled as he moved closer and took my hand in his. "They were beautiful.", I said as I showed him my parents through my memories. "They were the best parents a girl could ask for. They did any and everything to keep me happy. They took me to every appointment, attended all my school events, and thought it was the end of the world if I was ever sick.", I said as I reminisced and laughed.

My memories flowed through Benjamin's mind as I continued. "They worked so hard to be able to get me whatever I wanted. When they moved to California, they both came through a job opportunity. It wasn't until they were settled and saved up that they thought about having a child. "You're our gift.". They'd always tell me. They loved me so much.", I explained sadly. "Oh, Benj. You don't understand how much I miss them.", I said as the memories faded from his mind. "They seem like lovely people, Cara.", he said bringing me into his embrace. "They are. They really are.", I said staring into space. If I was human, I'd be crying streams of tears. 

I sighed and looked at him. He caressed my face with his thumb. "I'm here. I'll always be pleased to hear more about them.", he said and slowly moved his face closer to mine. "Thank you.", I said softly before he brought his lips to mine and kissed me. It was slow and gentle as if we had all the time in the world. "My love for you grows fonder each day, Cara.", was the last thing he said before kissing me again.
