Jake's POV

I wake up to the sound of birds chirping outside my window. I realise I've overslept quite a bit as the sun is already high in the sky. Not that it matters, really. Today's plans are pretty chill.

My mind drifts back to yesterday at the cafe and my house with Diya. I smile, thinking about how much fun we had, despite the whole fire fiasco.

I stretch and get out of bed, going into the bathroom and then heading to the kitchen. Both of my parents are already up, sitting at the kitchen table with their coffee. My mum looks up at me and smiles.

"Good morning, Jake! Sleep well?" she asks.

"Yeah, really well," I reply, grabbing a glass of orange juice from the fridge.

"Any plans for today?" my dad inquires, looking over from the newspaper.

"Not much." I say, "Might ask Diya to hang out later." I take a sip of my orange juice, attempting to hide my excitement.

My mum raises an eyebrow. "Diya? The girl you've been spending ages with lately?"

I nod, "Yeah, she's pretty cool."

"Well be careful," my dad says with a hint of concern. "Girls have cooties."

I roll my eyes. "Don't worry, Dad. I'll be fine."

As we continue chatting about random things, my mum suddenly narrows her eyes and leans a little closer. "Jake, what's that on your neck?"

I blink, a little confused. "Whatever do you mean, mother?"

She points to a spot a few centimetres away from my ear. "That mole. Has that always been there?"

I poke at the spot, feeling a small bump. "I don't know. Maybe."

My mum frowns, "It looks different. We should get it checked out."

"I'm sure it's fine, it's just a mole." I shrug it off.

"Better safe than sorry," my dad adds, folding up his newspaper. "Let's go to the doctor and see what they say."

We arrive at the doctor's office, and I can't help but feel a little uneasy. I mean, it's just a mole, nothing to worry about. But the look on my parents' faces says otherwise.

After a short wait, the doctor calls us in. He examines the mole carefully, shifting to a serious expression. "We will run a few tests, just to be sure."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We leave the doctor's office in a daze. My parents are talking, but I can barely hear them. My mind is racing with a thousand thoughts. The weight of the doctor's words hangs heavy on my shoulders. I can't seem to process it fully.
The drive home is a blur. My parents continue talking, my dad is gripping the steering wheel a bit too tightly. I stare out the window, convincing myself this is a dream. This isn't real. This is not happening.
As I walk up to my room, my phone buzzes with a message from Diya. She responded to my message from an hour ago, where I asked to hang out.
Diya
"I wish. I'm stuck at a family meetup rn. Maybe in the evening tho."
Jake
"Yeah that's fine, my parents just randomly decided to take me to the doctor, lol."
Diya
"HUH"
Jake
"It's nothing; I'm fine."
Diya
"Thats good! I better get back to my family before they pester me with questions about who I'm texting lol."
I put my phone away, taking a deep breath. The silence is deafening. I sit at the edge of my bed, staring at the floor. The doctor's words echo in my mind, but I push them aside.
I pick up my phone and scroll through my messages with Diya. She has no idea what's going on, and that's how I want to keep it for now. I'll tell her eventually, just not today.
I lay back on my bed, trying to clear my mind. I think about all the fun times with Diya. I need to focus on the present. Whatever happens next, I'll deal with it when the time comes.
The sun begins to set, and I feel my phone buzz in my pocket. I'm still laying on my bed. I check my notification. It's Diya. I quickly get out of bed and clean myself up before heading to Diya's house with my Bugatti to pick her up. She grins as she makes her way to my car. I'll miss that smile.
