Chapter 41: Legend of the Dragons

The word sent shivers down everyone's spines, as if instinctively they knew it was wrong, and they didn't even have Wayfarer backgrounds to reinforce that fear. They could only imagine how the actual Wayfarers felt, realizing their eternal foe had finally returned for its revenge.
"I may have discovered Atlantis itself." Professor Hawkins explained. "An underwater world millennia older than Egypt, but what really puzzled me were the carvings I saw on the walls. Take a look."
He handed them photographs and it became clear what puzzled him.
"Duel monsters!" Yugi said.
"Precisely. These monsters didn't originate 5000 years ago in Egypt, but far before that."
"The Spirit World!" Rain exclaimed. "The stories always talk about a time when our world and the Spirit World coexisted! It must've been talking about the realm of the duel monster spirits!"
Hawkins nodded, before yet another photo. "There is more to this, Rain. I believe you'll recognize these."
Rain took the photo and saw carvings of both Ori and Kuro standing with someone holding a willow staff along with the Millennium Bracelet.
"This is them." Rain realized. "The Great Sage."
"And she's called upon the power of two of your signature monsters. Rain, it's not unfounded to call you the successor to the Great Sage, you wield their Millennium Bracelet after all, but I'm starting to believe there's a much deeper connection between you, Queen (Y/N), and the Great Sage. Now, note how Ori and Kuro seems to be helping the Great Sage and in the photos showing Atlantis under attack, only some of the monsters are actually fighting."
"Does that mean that the other monsters are good?" Yugi asked.
"I haven't collected enough evidence to confirm that, but the legends about the Great Sage often have them accompanied by a forest spirit, who we now can confirm as Ori."
"Not to mention Kuro swore fealty to the Great Sage after she helped mend Ku's wing." Rain mentioned, getting a look from her grandfather.
"Rain, what are you talking about?"
The girl bit her tongue as Hawkins rubbed his chin. "Are you referring to that tablet I discovered a few months ago?"
"But grandfather just finished the interpretations when he found Atlantis." Rebecca said. "How did you know that was what the tablet was depicting, Rain?"
"Seems you put your foot in your mouth." (Y/N) scolded and Rain rubbed her neck.
"Yeah, yeah, I know. I don't need a lecture."
Carter crossed his arms. "Rain, have you been hiding things?"
She sighed. "Okay, just don't get mad. Remember when Noah kidnapped me in the virtual world? Well, while we were trapped, (Y/N) told him and Mokuba the story on the tablet, about how the Great Sage met three knights on the road and healed the hatchling of Kuro. When she was telling the story, it was like...we were living it, like we had lived it! Lately, we've been having dreams about a mysterious place, and it's always from the perspective of a woman called Eden. I...I think Eden is the Great Sage, and me and (Y/N) have been seeing her memories."
"Eden." Carter let the name roll on his tongue. "The woman we owe our existence to. You should have told us soon, Rain."
"I know, I know! But I wasn't sure until now. Anyways, the point is, Eden was friends with the spirits...monsters...whatever! That has to mean a few of them are on our side!"
"Really?" Tristan said, not believing it.
"I don't think we would've lasted in the Virtual World without Ori and Kuro, and even before then, (Y/N) summoned Ori back in Egypt to protect herself."
Professor Hawkins looked like he was contemplating something. "From Eden, to (Y/N), to Rain...I wonder."
Rebecca looked at him. "Grandfather?"
"It's just conjecture for now."
"Hey, we believe ya, Professor." Joey assured. "After all the weird stuff we've been through, I'd believe anything. Let's face it, there's plenty of stuff out there that can't be explained."
"Like how Yami and (Y/N) live in the Millennium Items." Yugi suggested.
"Actually, now that we can confirm the Grea-er, Eden, did live in Atlantis, all of the supernatural phenomena you've experienced are rooted there." Rebecca explained.
"Those are some big words, coming from such a little kid." Tristan noted without thinking, setting Rebecca off.
"A kid!? I'm a college student, thank you very much!"
"A college student!?" Everyone else shouted as Rain rubbed her head.
"Yup. Becs here is a certified genius. However, I think it's fair to call someone still shorter than me a kid, Becs."
The blonde girl pounced at the (H/C) haired girl and the two started a teasing play fight.
"I am just an average child genius! G.E.N.I.U.S!"
"Still a child."
Eventually, Rain managed to get a decent grip on her and it devolved into tickling, making them both laugh.
"Stormy knows how wrangle the smart kids." Joey muttered, making Rebecca glare at him.
"I heard that!"
"Now Rebecca, is that the behavior of a college student?" Her grandfather clearly teased, making her immediately put on a more composed persona.
"Sorry, gramps. Go on."
"Now, the point that I'm trying to make here is this: when Egyptian sorcerers conjured these monsters 5000 years ago, the Pharaoh and the Wayfarer Queen were there to save mankind from destruction. And now, both of them have been reborn in you two." Arthur looked at Yugi and Rain. "It can only mean mankind needs their help once again."
"What else is new?" Rain sighed as Yugi looked down.
"I guess, but where would we even start, Professor? Should we try getting all these monsters back to their own world or should we focus on what that weird motorcycle gang is up to?"
Arthur sighed. "Unfortunately, this is where my knowledge of the situation ends."
"Wait, there are still a few clues we have." Rain corrected, taking off Yugi's jacket and holding out her arm. "Take a look at these, Professor."
Arthur's eyes went wide as he carefully examined the glowing inscription. "Protection runes! I had only seen fragments and heard of them in passing, but to see them inscribed on a person!"
"Rain, where did you get these?!" Rebecca asked, equally as intrigued.
"They appeared during the duel with Gurimo. He used this...seal thing, and a voice told us, me and (Y/N), to teach them why Leviathan feared us. (Y/N) just needed to touch the barrier and the seal shattered because of these things."
Professor Hawkins nodded. "I see. And this voice? By chance was it-?"
"Yeah, I'm pretty sure that voice was Eden's."
"How many people you got in your head, Stormy?" Joey asked, making her glare at him.
"It's not that. I mean, it's different from (Y/N). I can always feel (Y/N) nearby, but Eden comes and goes. I don't think she's in the Millennium Bracelet."
"Perhaps she is bound to you in spirit." Arthur suggested. "The Millennium Bracelet has always been particular about its masters, but perhaps that's because it requires a spiritual component. You and Queen (Y/N) share a connection to the Great Sage, and more of her power may yet live in you."
"Her power, huh?" Rain repeated, staring at the runes and the bracelet. "Oh, there's one other thing."
She pulled out the necklace, showing it side by side with her bracelet.
"Wow!" Rebecca said in awe. "It's the same material!"
"Whatever it is, Gurimo had it on him last night." Yugi explained.
Hawkins took the necklace and examined the stone closely. "Incredible...I believe this shape is remarkably similar to something I discovered on my expedition, though I didn't make the connection between it and the bracelet until now. Would you mind if I held on to this stone, you two?"
"No, of course not, Professor." Yugi assured as Rain nodded.
"Anything to get answers."
"I'd like to take it back to my lab. I have a feeling it may hold the answers to many of our questions. Rain, I'd ask for the Millennium Bracelet as well, but I feel as though you'll it's power for yourself."
"Yeah..." She sighed, still uneasy about everything.
