END OF BEGINNING WREN WELLS
➛ I WAS EXHAUSTED. Last night was one of the worst in a while, having Mylo up all night with a stomach bug which would sooner or later plague my entire family, and God knows how dramatic Riley is when she's sick.
Aside from exhausted, i also found myself having to restrain myself from giggling and squealing like a little girl from the amount of affection Tadgh Lynch was giving. This is the boy who i learnt from the whispers in my classes was the 'hothead of the school', copying down my notes for me as i slept.
From what i also hear, he comes from an abusive household, and the lady who was with him at the park was Edel Kavanagh, also known as the Johnny Kavanagh's mam, what an iconic woman to be honest.
Now, i find myself sat opposite my new friend Dylan, as we talked about God knows what. "Sooo, how have you caught the attention of the hothead?" "What?" i laugh "Tadgh, how did you guys meet?" "Oh he knocked me out on the first day"
A laugh erupted from the blonde, me following shortly after. Dylan was like a version of me i refused to let out. She swore, spoke freely, and insulted those who were mean like it was nothing. I envy that, and dear God would i go to war for my siblings but i cannot defend myself the same way.
Dylan Gray was the person i couldn't bring myself to be, and it felt warming to know that she was my friend.

SWEEPING, SWEATING, SMILING. Those were the three things i rotated between for the past four hours as i spent my afterschool hours in 'HELENA's HAIRCUTS' . I now found myself behind the counter, answering calls for people wanting to book appointments.
Sitting here today, reminds me of when i first came here...
My ambitious eleven year old self sat out on the street corner at six am in the morning, awaiting the infamous Helena's arrival, my younger sisters practically asleep on the ground beside me as i couldn't leave them home alone.
Mam and Dad left for a trip to improve their mental, for the fifteenth time in two months. And due to the expense of their trips, i struggled to get food on the table for Riley and Taylor, so i had to take matters into my own hands.
A eyecatching pink car comes into sight, and i'm immediately on my feet. I dressed my best this morning, having my dads ginormous blazer over my dress to shelter me from the cold, my hair slicked into a neat bun.
"Excuse me!" i called out, "Are you Helena?" "Who's asking?" a bleach blonde woman asks. "I'm Wren Wells, i was wondering if you could hire me? I could sweep the floors everyday afterschool and take calls for you, whatever's best." i blurt, smiling nervously.
"How old are you, Miss Wells?" "Eleven, but i really need this money, please?" i plead. "You start on Monday, Wrenny, don't disappoint me"
That interaction was four years ago, and Helena has very quickly become a subsitute for the mother i never seemed to have. Hell, even my siblings like her, and they don't like anyone!
The door chimes, and the one and flipping only Edel Kavanagh strides in, her eyes meeting mine with an equal amount of shock. "Hello Wren, love." she smiles, walking to the counter i'm currently sat ontop of. "Hello Mrs Kavanagh." I respond, a nervous smile apparent on my face, "Are you booked in?"
"Oh no, i'm here to book an appointment for Shannon." Shannon Lynch, Tadghs older sister and the one and only girl in the Lynch family, "and call me Edel." "Okay, what day?" i smile, hopping off the counter to pull out the booking journal.
"How about Wednesday at around 5-ish?" "Perfect! Just a trim?" "Yes, thank you sweetheart." Edel drums her fingers on the desktop, practically analyzing me. "Wrenny Darling!" Helena calls, "You're off shift, thank you baby!" My eyes find its way to the clock on the wall, and to my surprise it infact was 6:00pm and it was my time to go home.
"Wren pet," Edel muses, "do you need a lift home?" "It's okay Edel, i can walk, it's too much to ask" i smile. "Nonsense, it will only take me a few minutes." As if the universe hates me, which let's face it, it does, rain begins to fall.
"Please, Wren, you'll get a cold." "Okay, thank you." i nod, noticing the grin on the older womans face as she walks me to her car. "Don't mind, it's just Tadgh and Joey in the car." TADGH??? and whoever the flip joey is?
"Look who i found!" Edel announces, as i open the backseat door and climb in, noticing Tadghs smirk appear. "Hey birdie." he chuckles "Stuff yourself, stud." i whisper. "Where do you live Wren, love?" Edel asks
"45 Western Avenue." i smile, lies. I lived on 49 western avenue, but I'm certain my sisters would die of shock if they saw me exit this car. "You alright?" an older version of Tadgh turns to face me from the front, "I'm Joey." "I'm Wren." i give him a shy smile "like the bird." Tadgh muses, and i scoff.
"I only said that because you messed up my brain! Stop mocking me." i scold, his brothers laughs filling the car. "Something you wanna bring to the conversation, you oldass man?" Tadgh asks, silencing his brother.
My phone buzzes in my blazer pocket, i grab it to see Riley calling me, "Hello welcome to roadkill café, you kill it, we grill it! How may i help you?" Stifled laughs leave the car, mainly from the two boys. "Elouise, what do i do, Layla is puking her guts up."
"Keep her by the toilet, get her to take small sips of water with 15 minute intervals, i'll be home soon." i softly speak "Okay, i love you." She whispers, heaving heard in the background. "I love you too, bye."
"Someone sick?" Joey questions and i hum in response. "Why do you wait 15 minutes?" Tadgh asks. "To help her keep it down, and settle her stomach from the chemical inbalance." i answer absentmindedly. "Where'd you learn that from, love?" Edel adds "I have a lot of siblings who don't know how to keep food down." i joke.
"Shouldn't that be ya mams job?" The older lynch boy says just as we pull onto our road. "That's what i think too," i murmer, "thank you for the ride, Mrs Kavanagh." "Take care, pet." she smiles, eyes filled with uncertainty "Bye Wren." joey nods and i wave, meeting a pair of concerned green eyes that i seem to know all to well
"Bye stud." i mutter, and he looks to relax. "I'll be seeing ya, birdie." He smiles as i exit the car. I pretend to get my keys out my bag, waiting for the impressive range rover to pull away before walking over to my house.
