The summer night was hot with the sound of crickets loud outside Emmi's window.

Said girl was lying awake, mind racing as she tried to process everything that had happened in the past week.

Her boyfriend Antonio had broken up with her. No big, dramatic, rainy premonition to warn her.

No, the day he broke up with her (exactly six days ago, on Monday, at school, while the sun was shining brightly and they laid underneath the shade of a large tree) he just looked her into the eyes and said: "Let's break up."

Emmi flipped in her bed, trying to figure out what went wrong with their relationship, just like she had done every single day since he broke up with her.

What had gone wrong? Why did she seem to be the only one torn about breaking up?

Maybe she was too invested in the relationship?

Maybe she was thinking too much about it?

Or maybe... maybe he was lying the whole time?

The day before they broke up, Sunday, was a great night. He took her on a date at the carnival their town was holding.

It was fun. The ferris wheel, the games, the food, the laughter- it was so, so exciting for her, the girl who never went out much.

Perhaps maybe he knew he was going to break up with her. Maybe he made up the decision that night. Maybe that's why he hugged her so tightly that night, underneath the streetlight in front of her house.

The stars twinkled down on them, it was a beautiful night and she couldn't be happier.

But maybe it was just her.

All the words he'd ever said to her- "You're beautiful." "I love your laugh." "You make me so happy."- those words that kept her up at night...
