The morning sun filtered through the curtains, casting a warm glow across the room. Marina stirred slowly, her body aching from the events of the previous night. She opened her eyes to find Eva sitting beside her, concern etched on her face.
"Good morning," Eva said softly. "How are you feeling?"
Marina took a deep breath, her mind foggy. "Exhausted. But I think I'll be okay. How's Dada?"
Eva glanced towards the bedroom where Dada was still sleeping. "She's still out. She needed the rest."
Marina nodded, grateful for Eva's support. "Thank you for staying with us, Eva. I don't know what I would have done without you."
Eva smiled gently. "We're friends, Marina. We're here for each other."
As Marina slowly got up, she couldn't shake the feeling that something was off. She made her way to the kitchen to make coffee, trying to clear her head. The events of the previous night played over and over in her mind, each moment filled with tension and uncertainty.
Dada eventually woke up, groggy and remorseful. She joined Marina and Eva in the kitchen, her eyes downcast. "I'm sorry about last night," Dada said quietly. "I shouldn't have drunk so much, and I shouldn't have let Tia get between us."
Marina reached out, taking Dada's hand. "We all make mistakes, Dada. What's important is that we move forward and learn from them."
Dada nodded, squeezing Marina's hand. "I promise I'll do better."
As the day wore on, they tried to return to some semblance of normalcy. They worked on their art, preparing for the exhibit, but there was a lingering tension that none of them could ignore.
That evening, as they sat together in the living room, Dada's phone rang. She glanced at the screen, her face paling. Marina noticed and frowned. "Who is it?"
Dada hesitated before answering. "It's Tia."
Marina's heart sank. "Why is she calling you?"
Dada answered the call, her voice tense. "Tia, what do you want?"
Tia's voice was calm, almost too calm. "We need to talk, Dada. There's something you need to know."
Dada glanced at Marina and Eva, her anxiety evident. "Okay, I'm listening."
Tia took a deep breath. "Last night, when we were talking... I recognized you from somewhere. I didn't put it together until I got home and did some research."
Marina and Eva exchanged worried glances. "What is it, Tia?" Dada asked, her voice trembling.
Tia's next words sent a chill down Dada's spine. "You were adopted, right? From a small town upstate?"
Dada's breath caught in her throat. "Yes, but how do you know that?"
Tia hesitated before continuing. "I think we're related, Dada. I think I'm your sister."
The room fell into a stunned silence. Marina's eyes widened in shock, and Eva's hand flew to her mouth. Dada could barely comprehend what she was hearing. "What? How is that possible?"
Tia's voice softened. "I was adopted too, but I always knew I had a sibling out there. I found some old records, and everything matches up. The dates, the places... it's all there."
Dada felt like the ground had shifted beneath her feet. "This can't be real. How did we never know?"
Tia's voice was gentle. "Adoption records can be tricky. But I'm certain, Dada. We need to meet and talk about this."
Marina placed a comforting hand on Dada's shoulder. "We need to verify this, Dada. It's a lot to take in."
Dada nodded numbly. "Okay, Tia. We'll meet. But this needs to be handled carefully."
Tia agreed, and they set a time to meet the next day. As Dada hung up the phone, she turned to Marina and Eva, her eyes filled with confusion and fear. "What if she's telling the truth? What if I've had a sister all this time and never knew?"
Marina pulled Dada into a hug. "We'll figure it out together, Dada. No matter what happens, we'll face it as a family."
Eva nodded in agreement. "We'll support you through this, Dada. You're not alone."
That night, as they tried to process the shocking revelation, Marina couldn't shake the feeling that their lives were about to change in ways they couldn't yet understand. The bond between them would be tested, but she knew that with love and trust, they could overcome any challenge.
And so, with a mixture of fear and hope, they prepared to face the truth about Dada's past, knowing that whatever they discovered, they would face it together.
