......

A light knock came at the door.

"Daniel, the movie's going to start in twenty minutes! We won't be able to have time to get popcorn at this rate!"

Daniel chuckled, brushing back his pale blonde curls into what he thought was a best approximation of a neat hairstyle before heading out of the room.

"Alright, calm down, I'm coming!"

He headed down the stairs to see his two childhood friends staring at him with a mixture of impatience and exasperated amusement from the bottom. The guy was wearing an army green beanie with earpieces that were probably off at the moment or on pause, and raising his eyebrow at Daniel. The girl was clutching their movie tickets in one hand, with several bracelets with song titles on them adorning her wrist. Both sported the same dark brown hair, except the girl had green eyes and the guy had grey.

"Took you long enough." The girl snorted with a cheeky grin.

"Did you...tell your mom you were going to sleep over at our place tonight?" The guy asked him with a curious and somewhat awkward expression.

Arriving in front of them both, Daniel sighed and did a slight eye roll.

"...No need. She left the house a few days ago."

His friends exchanged a look and knew they didn't need to say anything more.

"Remember, I'm trusting you all not to stay out too late and to not get up to anything reckless before coming back." Appearing at the top of the stairwell was his friends' mother, who had her blonde hair tied into a bun. "Felix, I don't want to have to see Tonia pulling you drunk and blacked out back to the house."

"Of course ma, relax!" Felix grinned up at her. "I've learnt my lesson. Besides, that was a one time thing, I'm not gonna drink past my limit again-not usually, anyway."

Tonia sighed and shook her head, albeit with an amused smile on her face.

"Don't worry mum, I'll make sure we head back on time. Besides, Daniel will help me, yeah?"

"Sure." Daniel smirked, slinging his bag over one shoulder. "We'll see you at ten thirty, Mrs Walker."

A head of blonde hair, much like her mother's, popped out from the same room. She looked at Felix and Tonia and then up at her mom with wide chocolate brown eyes.

"Why can't I go with them, mum?" She asked innocently.

The older woman smiled and ruffled the girl's hair. "Because you need to turn in earlier than your older brother and sister. But don't worry, we have Friendship is Magic!"

"Yay!" The younger girl clapped her hands with unabashed delight, as Felix, Tonia and Daniel couldn't help chuckling at how adorable she was.

"We'll bring you back your favourite candies from the store." Felix promised, turning the doorknob.

"See you tonight, Avery." Tonia added, as Daniel waved at the younger girl, who waved back happily.

Felix and Tonia both chorused their goodbyes to their mother before they and Daniel headed out of the house, closing and locking the door behind them.

......

Daniel had known the Walker twins since he was five, and even when his father had still been around the trio were practically seen together everywhere.

Each fell into a role in the little group. Felix was the eager try-everything to the point of occasional recklessness type, Tonia was the quiet, artsy and somewhat more restrained twin sister who sometimes had to reel in her brother's antics, and Daniel...well he was somewhere in between them both. He wasn't afraid to get out there and explore new things, but at the same time not to the same extent that Felix did.
