"Are you ready, Perle?"
"5 minutes more."
We have our Annual Sicilian Gala to attend today, at Bronx. And dear miss cutie Eleanor wants to join us. She is going there as Lucien's friend.
And why in the world does she want to come to my event?
I just hope she behave around my people, because considering her behavior around me these days, I don't trust her at all.
The car ride to the venue is tense, filled with a mixture of anticipation and unspoken frustration.
The luxurious black Audi glides smoothly through the city streets, but inside, the atmosphere is anything but smooth.
Eleanor is seated in the back with and me and Lucien the front. She's scrolling through her phone, a smug expression on her face.
Lucien is focused on tab, occasionally glancing at his watch.
I sit quietly, staring out the window, trying to calm the storm brewing inside me.
The silence is finally broken by Eleanor's voice, dripping with feigned innocence.
"You know, Lucien it's been so long since we've attended an event together. It feels just like old times."
He glances up, offering a polite smile. "Yes, it has been a while. The last time we went together was in your university gala."
I can't help but feel a pang of irritation at how easily she slips into conversations, as if she's still an integral part of Lucien's life.
She is I mean, still.
I take a deep breath, trying to keep my emotions in check.
"We should catch up more often," Eleanor continues, her eyes flicking to me with a challenge.
"Don't you think, Serafina?"
"I'm sure Lucien's schedule is quite busy," I reply, my tone cool. "But I'm sure he'll make time for you when he can."
Eleanor smirks, satisfied with the underlying tension she's stoked. "Of course, our time is precious."
Lucien, sensing the discomfort, tries to change the subject. "So, Serafina, are we prepared for tonight's event? I know it's important to your alliances."
"Yes, everything is in place," I say, forcing a smile. "Tonight will be significant for our partnerships."
Eleanor interjects again, unable to resist stirring the pot. "Partnerships are so vital, aren't they? Especially in maintaining the delicate balance of power."
Her words are pointed, a thinly veiled jab at my position. I refuse to let her get to me. "Indeed, they are. It takes a lot of effort and dedication to maintain strong alliances."
