In the prosperous Song dynasty, Emperor Zhao Xi (King Zhaolin) and Empress Liang Lu (Queen Lian) ruled with kindness and wisdom. Beloved by their people, they brought peace and prosperity to the land. Their court was renowned for its scholars, artists and poets.
One auspicious day, Queen Lian announced her pregnancy and the entire dynasty erupted in joy. The news spread like a wildfire, and the people rejoiced. The emperor and empress were overjoyed, and the palace was filled with laughter and music.
As the queen's belly grew, so did the excitement. The people of the dynasty showered the royal couple with blessings, gifts and well wishes. Poets composed odes to the unborn child, while scholars interpreted auspicious signs in the stars.
In the sixth month of pregnancy, a grand ceremony was held at the "Temple of Heaven", where the emperor and empress prayed for their child's health and wisdom. The people gathered outside, burning incense and offering prayers.
As the due date approached the dynasty held its breath in anticipation. "Would a child be a boy or a girl? would they inherit their parent's wisdom and kindness, only time can tell us."
As the court ministers and officials gathered to offer their blessings, they all seemed to say the same thing,
"May you have a strong and healthy son your majesties." The emperor smiled graciously, nodding in appreciation. But queen Lian's expression subtly changed. A flicker of annoyance crossed her face, and she felt a slight tightening in her chest. Why did everyone assume they wanted a son? Why couldn't they wish for daughter instead?
She but her lips, suppressing the urge to speak out. As the queen, she had to maintain her dignity, and composure. She couldn't show any hint of displeasure or disagreement. So she smiled politely and nodded along with the others, all the while thinking to herself, "Why can't they just wish for a daughter? A daughter would be just as wonderful."
The emperor, oblivious to his wife's inner turmoil, beamed with pride, his face radiating joy and anticipation. The ministers and officials continued to offer their blessings.
Queen Lian's silence was misinterpreted as quite agreement, and the ceremony continued with an air of jubilation. But deep within the queen's heart whispered a different wish,
"May our child be born healthy and strong, regardless of whether they are a boy or a girl ."The day of reckoning had finally arrived, Queen Lian lay in the labor room, her face contorted in pain as she clutched the bed rails. The emperor paced back and forth outside , his face etched with anxiety and worry.
