Mark’s POV
The last thing I wanted to do was remember that dream. It still hurt, but listening to what Destiny said made some sense in a horror movie kinda way. Maybe the piece of jewelry was haunted and it was just waiting for me to find it so we could bring the poor girl some sense of justice in the afterlife.
I tried to focus on the girl's face and strangely, she had an uncanny resemblance to my Destiny. She had beautiful chocolate eyes and raven hair and pale skin. She even had a light dusting of freckles on her nose. Her lips were plump and pink. Both women were dainty and petite. The only major difference was the shape of their faces. Destiny had a heart shaped face and the other girl had an oval shaped face.
Maybe that was the most disturbing part of the dream. Because the girl so easily shifted into Destiny. Everything happened so subtly, that it seemed to bleed together. Her eye shape shifted softly and the freckles lightened. Her eyebrows thinned out, changing the shape of her face.
But I would never let that happen to my woman. I would never let some evil snake hurt my Destiny. She is too precious to me. I don’t understand how anyone would do that to another human being period. It takes someone with no soul to want to kill another person, and a complete psychopath to kill for the fun of it.
Remembering his emotions from my dream, I got angry. Who could do that? And I still don’t understand the reason for the emotions. I could only feel what he was feeling at the moment, not the memories associated with the emotions.
I pulled out my laptop and placed it on the table. I look over at Destiny and search her face to make sure this is what she really wants. I will do it, of course, but I want to make sure she wants to see this woman.
“Are you ready for this?” I ask. “I can do this by myself if you need me to. I don’t mind. You don’t need to see…”
She shakes her head, cutting me off. She has that determined glint in her eyes now. I just hope she doesn’t regret what she finds out.
I don’t know how she will feel once she sees the girl. Destiny is really emotional already, I don’t know how she will feel when she sees how closely she resembles her. But I won’t stop her if she is sure this is what she wants to do. I am just here to support her no matter what.
“Yes. I have to do this. Not just for her, but for us too!” she insists, reaching over and squeezing my hand. That small gesture gave me enough of a sign that she could at least handle it. And if she did end up falling apart, I would still be here to catch her.
I admire her grit and determination. She is so brave and kind. I don’t know what I ever did to deserve this woman. But I am sure glad I did.
I sigh and squeeze her hand back. She was right. We won’t get any rest until we figure out what is going on. I knew we both had to do this fast so we can move on with our lives. I don’t want to spend the rest of our lives plagued with nightmares of a murder neither of us has anything to do with.
I lean over and kiss her brow. I am so proud of her. “Okay, love.”
Then I turn on my laptop. It only takes a few seconds for it to boot up and open up the search engine.
I looked up the obituaries. It’s sad to see so many faces.
There was a newborn who died of SIDS. I haven’t seen one of those in some time. The baby was only a month old. She was survived by a lovely couple and an older brother.
There was a mother who died in a car accident. The mother had been on her way to work. It seems she was a school teacher and had left a husband behind with three teenage children. The whole community mourned her loss.
