Chapter Three

I met Lorcan around one of the junk piles-literal junk; things that no one wants from traders-for our lunch break. We have always met for our lunch breaks around this pile, ever since we were little kids.

"Where'd you want to go?" He asks.

"Let's go to Kemba's," I decide.

Kemba's is an American-styled restaurant. Yes, even though we've separated from the beings up above and their world, that doesn't necessarily mean we've made up our own food cuisine.

We sat down in a booth at Kemba's and ordered. I ordered the ziti with a meatball. I wasn't in the mood for an exquisite lunch, and I didn't want to eat much either.

"How's work going for you?" Lorcan asked me, breaking the newfound silence.

"Same old, same old. You know the drill. Talk to customers, see what they have, get other customers to come over, watch them discuss and trade with each other, then repeat. Nothing interesting has been traded yet today, that I've seen. The most interesting thing was a gold-banded watch, but the watch wasn't new or fancy or anything. Just the gold band made it interesting to me. What about you?"

"Someone traded a spatula. Kinda random."

I scoffed. "That is random," I said, agreeing. "What else? How do you think it's going so far today? Customers saying anything weird to you, or anything like that? The only off topic things they say to me are about my education here. Ha!"

"Not really. I mean this one guy saw us talking earlier and asked me if you were my girlfriend. I said no, and he started heckling me about why, and that I'm missing a great opportunity of being your boyfriend. But you know I don't think of you that way. You'll always be my best friend."

"Huh, interesting. Well, I don't feel that way about you either, sorry to crush your dreams. Just kidding. I would never, ever want to crush your dreams, Lor."

"Thanks, Mae."

Just then, our food was served.

As the waitress was leaving, she said, "Have a great date!" What? Can't a girl and her guy best friend just have lunch together? Not everything has to be romantic.

Lorcan started chuckling. "Seriously? Can't a guy have lady friends?"

"Guess not. Let's eat." I shrugged.
