"So, Hadrian... why a cake?"
The two of you walked back to his parents' bakery. You stayed true to your words and decided to help him craft a cake, but first you needed to gather the ingredients.
Hadrian stopped harvesting the wheat to look at you. "My brother."
You're just about finishing up gathering eggs. "Ah, I see."
Hadrian promptly went back to what he was doing while you gave him a look. You have a feeling that he wants the cake more than his brother does. Besides, "where is this 'brother' of yours anyway?"
He stands up with a sigh and wordlessly goes inside. You follow him into the bakery. You're pretty familiar with this place as you've often been here on errands. However, you never had access behind the counter. Watching Hadrian move about the storage area with practiced ease made you wonder... just how did you never run into him all this time?
I mean, he's on the run, right? Like Connor was... you thought with a pensive look on your face. Maybe you forgot? No, no... people my age here are pretty rare. I think I would remember if I've met him before. You're also pretty sure that his parents never even mentioned Hadrian before. Something definitely happened. Considering that you haven't encountered Hadrian nor his brother before now, that meant... Have Hadrian and his brother been living out on the lam for this long? How have they been surviving this whole time?
"Can I trust you?"
You jumped. While you were spacing out, Hadrian had gotten pretty close. You couldn't see most of his face, but you could feel him staring into your eyes.
For some reason, you were feeling a bit coy. "Well, that's up to you to decide."
Hadrian turns his head to the side and clicks his tongue. He then goes back to searching through chests and barrels.
"We need sugar and milk, right?"
"Yup."
Hadrian ventures into the pantry while you lean on the back wall, closing your eyes. A couple minutes pass, and Hadrian comes back with the ingredients in hand. A bucket of milk and... sugar?
"Hadrian. What is this?" you yawn.
He looks down at the items and back to you with his head slightly tilted in confusion.
"This... this what you said we needed."
"Hadrian, that's gunpowder."
"O-Oh."
From there, you decided to take over as head chef or in this case, head baker...? Who knows? All that you know is that you needed to intervene before this cake gets ruined.
Things went smoothly after that. You put the egg, wheat, sugar, and the milk onto the crafting table. The items tremble before colliding and before you know it, you have a cake. Out of the corner of your eye, you could see Hadrian's mouth slightly ajar in awe. It was endearing to say the least.
You look and smile at him. "Welp, here you go. I hope you enjoy."
Hadrian cleared his throat. "Y-Yeah...Thanks."
The Husk hybrid goes silent after that, staring at the cake. Looking closer, he has a slight frown. He seems to be in his own world. You can see him raise his bandaged arms slightly and look down at his trembling hands. Hadrian lets out a raspy sigh, sounding very much like a Husk. You can hear him sniffle before a sharp intake of breath.
