St. 𝙅𝘼𝙈𝙀𝙎 𝙋𝙎𝙔𝘾𝙃𝙄𝘼𝙏𝙍𝙄𝘾 𝙃𝙊𝙎𝙋𝙄𝙏𝘼𝙇I sat down at my computer, my chest heaving as I try to gasp in air. Outside of the nurses station, I see some patient care techs explaining the situation to security. I don't know why I decided to come into this field sometimes, I swear.
"The next time I get hit I'm quitting on the spot." Maxine, another nurse, said as she pushed open the door to the nurses station.
St. James was a psychiatric hospital, and we were, unfortunately, one of the best in the country. Which means people had the gall to travel here for treatment. It's all fine and dandy until we have incidents like this, which are practically a daily occurrence.
A patient of ours, who has psychosis issues and bipolar disorder, decided to go off the walls and attack one of our staff, who was just trying to get his vitals for his meds, which he had been refusing during his admission.
I turn in my chair, watching Max drown the rest of her Red Bull as she placed an ice pack on her hand. Our night staff tonight was mostly women, with only one male who was on the opposite wing tonight for his assignment.
"I don't get why he won't be transferred. It's not like he does this out of the ordinary, he has a history of violence toward staff." I tell her, going into his chart and pulling up the documentation of his last visit.
I push my braid over my shoulder, typing the incident from what I was told so the doctor can adjust his meds. Thankfully I managed to inject him with some calming meds before they put him in seclusion, which was a less intense version of the stereotypical padded room with white walls.
As everything calmed down and we began to prep for the end of our shifts, Nico came strolling into the nurses station holding a bag of candy.
"What's happening over here?" He asked, sitting in the spinning chair next to me. I let out a huff of air, blowing my bangs off of my forehead.
Nico was my high school best friend, my nursing school partner in crime, and now my roommate in the two bedroom apartment we share twenty minutes away.
I loved Nico but he always chose to come in with the happiness at the wrong times. He held out his bag of Swedish Fish and I just took the entire bag out of his hands.
As I gave him the run down of the situation, the alarms sounded once again, and I groaned as I jumped out of my chair and followed the rest of the running staff.
