Emmett's got both of his hands on his hips when Edward pulls up. He looks like a disappointed father as he shakes his head before Edward can get a foot on the ground.

"Don't even start!" He huffs before Edward can even open his mouth.

He paces around for a bit before finally looking directly at Edward. It seems as if he'd come to the conclusion that Edward was pissed Emmett let his little secret slip.

"He needs to know the truth," His finger shoots up into the air before Edward can interject, begging him to shut the hell up, "because not knowing is only going to hurt him. So don't come out here with your bullshit."

Edward's never seen him like this. He seems genuinely irked by Edward's decision to not immediately dump the last five years on Jacob. However, Emmett didn't know where Jacob and Edward stood because Edward didn't know where Jacob and Edward stood. The last time Emmett had seen Jacob, he was chucking a cooler at Edward's head. Excuse Edward if he wanted to ease into some of the most tumultuous and pathetic years of his life.

At the end of the day, he'd run away. Without any explanation at that. Just telling Jacob what happened wasn't going to be enough. He needed to actually trust Edward first. Some stuff just needed time and care.

Edward doesn't bother arguing his case as he eyes the lake in front of them.

"I love him, Em."

"Yeah, I got as much." Emmett snips, rolling his eyes as he closes the distance, seemingly realizing that Edward isn't going to fight him on this.

"I have to gain his trust again. The natural way."

He gets another exasperated eye roll for his efforts. His brother looks as if he's about to say something dripping with sarcasm. Unfortunately, his rant is cut off by the sound of screeching tires. Edward can't see what's happening, back turned toward the street and Emmett doesn't waste time explaining, grabbing Edward and yanking him towards the jeep. He's stumbling back as a black truck rams into his car.

Edward's brain goes down a list of things that could be happening but immediately screeches to a halt as the smell of human blood hits his nose.

 Maybe the driver was hurt?

He takes a step back, putting his nose into his elbow and trying to hold his breath.

Maybe they could call someone and leave whoever was inside for EMTs.

It'd been a couple of days since he'd gone hunting and he didn't want any accidents because he couldn't control himself. He was seemingly on thin ice as it was if Emmett's earlier irritation was anything to go by.

The door of the black truck is thrown open and out steps something that is clearly not human. It looks human if someone saw it out of the corner of their eye, but he couldn't fool someone who was actually paying attention. Several things about him would set off their fight-or-flight response. His red eyes, his sallow skin, his clothes...the way it seems as if it's trying to mimic the era, but it's a decade behind. Its smile isn't friendly. It looks as if it's trying to be, but it's a little too sharp, its eyes a little too vacant.

"Sorry, boys, didn't see you there."

It has a drawl that says it was probably, over a hundred years ago, born down south. Or maybe it was reborn down south. It's got that same stench that hit Edward's nose the night that kid t-boned them. Prom night.

He could see the twinkle in Jacob's eyes, the way it immediately morphed into horror as the lights got closer and closer.

The thing's eyes finally gain some clarity as if it recognizes Edward.
