i am the sea and nobody owns me
— Pippy LongstockingREBECCA BISHOP IS CONTENT
WITH BEING ORDINARY.At just sixteen years old, she's accustomed herself to keeping her distance from the teenagers who scramble for popularity, clawing their way up to the top of the food chain. Unlike them, Rebecca doesn't mind going unnoticed, happy to sit and go unrecognized in the corner of people's minds. The only thing that really sets her apart is her fiery red hair, a striking contrast to the sea of blondes and brunettes that inhabit her town.
Living in her own bubble has its downsides, as do all things in life. She frequently finds herself terribly lonely, the most social interaction being between fighting with her younger brother about who drank the last juice. She notices people around her, people who would fit into her own world, people who would respect and enjoy her strange brand of solitude. Whilst Rebecca likes to be alone, she finds that being alone with someone she likes would be a better way to enjoy her adolescence.
Cue a trio of three girls who had each noticed her in their own ways — Cleo, Emma, and Rikki. All very different, yet all very willing to drag Rebecca into their antics. The first, of many, was to drive out to sea on a dinghy stolen from the douchey rich kid, Zane Bennet. Someone the redhead certainly didn't want in her solitary bubble.
Their little trip takes them to the beautiful yet dangerous Mako Island, stranding them on a stretch of land that nobody dares to venture to. The island leads them into a dark cave, its saving grace being the glowing pool connecting them to the ocean.
And when the moon shines over the luminescent water that the four girls find themselves in, Rebecca's life changes dramatically, namely because of the tail that sprouts when she gets wet, and the magical powers connected to her new appendage.
