Iwaizumi had always been afraid of thunderstorms.
Only people who knew was his parents, but they just had to be out of town the one night this month when one was starting to form in the clouds.
Something about the storm was unsettling. It could've been how dark it got, or how the lights flickered in the house, maybe even the loud booms that erupted from the sky— who was he kidding? It was definitely the noise.
For someone being loud and aggressive himself, he hated loud noises. They always caused headaches and headaches led to migraines and migraines hurt.
Iwa was currently sitting on his bed with a movie playing faintly on the tv infront of him. He wasn't paying attention to it, instead he was keeping a watchful eye in the window to the side of his room.
He watched as the clouds slowly but surely covered the sky and how a low rumble sounded.
He gripped the soft blanket between his fingers and sunk down into his bed. The volume on his tv increased as he pressed the small plus button.
Oikawa was supposed to come over to study, but Iwa figured he would cancel with the excuse of 'I don't wanna ruin my hair in the rain.'
The thunder grew louder when rain started to fall and Iwaizumi was a mess.
He had moved from his spot in the bed to the slightest cramped closet of his. His phone was clutched tight in his hand with the blanket wrapped securely over his body.
Iwa's thumb hovered over the call button of a certain brunette, debating if he was really about to ask him to come over.
A strike of lightning, followed by a large boom outdoors, made him choose fairly quickly. He tapped on the call button and bit his quivering lip as to stop himself from crying.
Yeah, he hated crying too.
"Hello?" Oikawa spoke clearly into the phone.
Iwaizumi figured he didn't check who called again. It was a bad habit he picked up and Iwaizumi told him he should really bother checking in case he responded inappropriately to an important call.
"It's me." His voice was shaky but he hoped that Oikawa wouldn't notice.
"Ah! Iwa! I'm sorry I'm not coming over, I don't wanna get— Wait what's wrong with your voice?"
Of course he noticed.
Iwaizumi took a deep breath as a loud strike of lightning illuminated his bedroom. His eyes squeezed shut. "N-Nothing. Um.., sorry to bother you."
"Iwa." His voice felt comforting. Iwaizumi felt his stomach ease. "Are you alright? Did something happen?"
'Damnit he won't make fun of you. Relax.'
"Nothing happened— I mean n..,not really?" He felt water slip down his cheeks and he knew he was done for if he kept talking. Iwaizumi set his phone on the floor and covered his face with his hands as he sniffled softly in an attempt to calm down.
Worry strung through Oikawa's voice when he called Iwaizumi's name and he didn't respond, "Iwa, I'm gonna come over."
Iwaizumi didn't even hear the call end. Instead, he was preoccupied lying down on his back and gripping his loose sleep shirt with his hand. His other was clenched firm and against the floor as to try and stop himself from crying.
The attempt obviously wasn't working since the storm had picked up considerably.
Iwaizumi tried to use the blanket to cover his ears but the thought of being alone in the storm didn't soothe his mind. His body trembled as his eyes shut tightly.
Oikawa had arrived at his house a few moments later. He pulled out the house key that Iwa had given him a few years back and unlocked the door in one swift movement.
He scanned the main areas of the house for the brunette but when he heard the thunder boom followed by a muffled cry, he knew almost immediately where Iwaizumi was.
Oikawa ran down the hall and opened the door to the bedroom he's been in about a thousand times now.
It had changed considerably since they were kids. It used to be completely done with Godzilla merch but now it was just glimpses of the fictional character. His room was mainly sports themed now.
"Iwa? Hey— Hey, why are you in the closet?" Oikawa laughed softly and pulled the door open a bit more, sitting himself next to the man.
Iwaizumi shuddered and hid his face with his arms, his breathing uneven.
"Oh honey.." Oikawa shifted around in the closet until eventually he made their position more comfortable. Now, he was Iwaizumi laying down between his legs, his head rested on his thigh while Oikawa ran his fingers through his hair.
"Why are you crying? Hm? You never cry like this, love." Oikawa spoke gently, he leaned down and pressed a kiss to Iwaizumi's temple.
The storm outside did Iwaizumi no justice. Oikawa's question was answered when the thunder boomed louder than ever that night and it resulted in Iwaizumi latching onto him for dear life.
He'd never seen his boyfriend so scared.
"I..,I'm— Im sorry.." Iwaizumi whispered as his fingers clung to Oikawa's shirt. "Just p-please done move."
"Hajime, I'm not going anywhere." Oikawa rubbed his back, carefully drawing circles.
Iwaizumi's breathing calmed down slowly as Oikawa whispered soothing words in his ear. Oikawa rubbed his back, peppered his face with kissed, and covered his ears with his hands for what felt like hours all until the storm had finally stopped.
The two boys now layed curled on Iwaizumi's bed in each others arms.
"Why didn't you tell me you were scared of thunder?" Oikawa hummed, he tapped on Iwaizumi's chest.
"It's— It's embarrassing? What seventeen year old is scared of thunder?"
Oikawa shrugged. "I don't see how that's embarrassing. I wish you would've told me sooner so I'd have known."
That made Iwaizumi smile. He leaned down just a bit to kiss Oikawa's forehead, then he pecked his lips and spoke, "thank you for being here with me."
"Always, Iwa."
Iwaizumi hummed and scratched Oikawa's head with his fingernails. Oikawa relaxed into his side and closed his eyes, his hand held Iwaizumi's bicep subconsciously as he felt himself grow tired.
"..I love you, Toru."
Oikawa smiled, leaning more into his boyfriend's touch. "Love you too, dork."
