"Can I?" Ella, my daughter, asks pointing at the blue box of Oreos.
"Sorry, sweetie, we don't have enough money for that. We still need to get your milk and stuff for the house." I grab her milk from the nearest shelf, toilet paper, and cereal before heading to checkout. The cashier man was grouchy, so I knew I had to make this quick.
"25.49 is your total. Cash or card?" He asks avoiding my gaze.
"Cash. Uhm, that should be enough." I say placing all my dollar bills on the counter.
"Your a dollar short." He says.
"No, that can't be."
"You paid 24.49. You either get some money or scram."
"Here, take this." A nice old lady behind me says as she hands me a dollar bill.
"Thank you so much."
"I'm not doing this to be nice. You young ones always need to pop out children and never know how to take care of them." She basically pushes me out of the way, and starts paying for her stuff.
"Thanks for the dollar." I say and grab Ella and hurry out of the grocery store.

We arrive at our apartment to see my front door unlocked. It could only mean one thing.
"Henry, how many times have I told you to close the door when you come in?" I ask my best friend. Henry was sprawled on my couch, with all my snacks surrounding him.
"Hello to you too." He answered. "I came to check on my favorite niece."
"She's your only niece. Technically she's not even your niece."
"Shut up. It's not health class. " He retorts.
"Shouldn't you be at work?"
"I told my boss I was sick."
"You lied to to your boss?" Henry was a goody two shoes. He worked for a skincare company and they paid him really well. When Ella and I first moved to New York, Henry offered for us to live with him. I declined multiple times, until he finally gave up. Henry had been my best friend since 6th grade after someone pulled a horrible prank on him. I lent him my shirt and ever since we've been borrowing each other's clothes. Henry was always my only real friend. Sure, I had other friends, but we were only friends because I played sports.
"He's an asshole. I work for him 5 days a week, I deserve a break." I laugh and hand him Ella, while I put all our groceries away.

"Check this out. Nicolle Garcia, CEO of Glam Cosmetics, hints on joining Love Island with Best Friend, Maddie Thompson! That's insane." Henry explained, reading the article off his phone.
"Good for them." I mumble.
"Good for them?! I can't believe they're single. Look at how hot they are." He yells.
"Yeah, they are hot. Especially Nicolle."
"Nah, it's Maddie for me. She's so fucking hot. I would totally let her su-" He rambles.
"I don't need to know that." I interrupted him.
"Maybe we should sign up for Love Island." Henry blurts.
"Haha, remember last time? We sent out application and we got rejected the same day. No thanks." I laughed. Henry thought it was a good idea to sign up for love island in our freshman year of college. I remember Henry sobbing when they rejected our application.
"Whatever. We're still on for the fair tomorrow right?"
"Yeah, Ella's been chanting fair all day."
"Alright. See you tomorrow." Henry says as he gets up and leave. I close the door behind him, clean all our dishes and head to bed.
