chapter one

finally, the day has come. my mom, my sister, and I are moving back to my moms hometown in california today. its been about 6 months since my dad passed and my mom is doing so much better. she has been so excited about moving back to cali and getting a fresh start. she has been non stop talking about seeing her childhood best friend. funny enough, maggie (my moms best friend) is a realtor. when my mom mentioned to her that she wanted to move back, she helped her buy a house right down the street from her and her family. I haven't seen maggie since before we moved to washington which was when I was 4 so I don't remember her super well. my mom told me and my sister that maggie has 2 kids, billie and finneas. billie is a year older than me, and finneas is a couple years older. my sister olivia just had her 15th birthday so we are about 6 years apart.

"come on girls we need to go I don't want to get stuck in too bad of traffic." my mom says yelling up the stairs.

"coming mom" my sister and I yell back in unison.

we carry our last bags down the stairs and out of the house. we get ourselves situated in the car and hit the road. I put in my headphones and shuffle my car ride playlist. 

*time skip*

I ended up falling asleep in the car. before I knew it, my mom was lightly shaking me awake and telling me that we are about to pull up to the house.  I take out my headphones and begin to get together all the things I have around the car. once we pull up to the house, we start unloading the moving truck. after about 2 hours of unloading, we finally take a bit of a break.

"sooo maggie invited us over for dinner tonight as a welcome. go get cleaned up and then we'll head over there okay?" my mom says as she pulls my sister and I in for a hug.

we both tell her okay and head upstairs to our rooms to get ready. I set my bags down in the corner of my room and had to my closet to pick out something from the clothes that I have already unpacked. I end up just putting on a pair of jorts and a tee shirt because I'm not really in the mood to dress up. I look in my bathroom mirror as I fix my hair and put on some perfume. I then head down the stairs meeting my sister and mom next to the front door. we leave the house, my mom locking the door behind us. we decided to walk there since we literally only live 4 houses down from the oconnell's. after the short walk we walk up to the front door. my mom knocks and then takes a step back from the door. after a short 30 seconds, the door swings open and we are met with maggie and a big smile.

"oh my goodness it is so good to see you." maggie says pulling my mom into a hug. she pulls away from the hug and directs her attention towards my sister and i.

"bella and avery you guys have gotten so big." maggie says cheerfully as she pulls us both in for a hug.

"please come inside! billie, finneas, and patrick should be out back setting up the table."

we all nod and follow her inside the house and to the backyard. as soon as we step outside, finneas, patrick, and shark all come over giving us a warm welcome.

"I need to use the restroom before dinner. do you mind telling me where it is?" I say looking at finneas as I'm still petting shark. 

"for sure. just go right upstairs and it'll be the second door on your left." I thank him and head inside and upstairs. 

I walk to the bathroom and open the door. 

"oh my god I'm so sorry" I say being met with a girl in a towel and long dripping wet hair.

"no don't worry its all good. just give me 2 minutes to change super quick and the bathrooms all yours." the girl says letting out a small laugh and shutting the door.

that must be billie. god she is so pretty. after 2 minutes as promised, billie comes out of the bathroom.

"you must be avery. my mom has been talking so much about you guys. sorry we had to meet while I was half naked that probably isn't the most amazing first impression." billie says running her fingers through her wet hair.

"yes im avery. that must make you billie. and don't worry im not complaining." I say realizing what I said after it had already came out of my mouth. 

"not complaining huh?" billie says letting out a laugh.

"no no im sorry I meant um its okay no worries." I say feeling my cheeks warming up out of embarrassment. 

"don't apologize love its okay im just giving you a hard time." billie says hitting me playfully on the shoulder.

"now I won't hold you from the bathroom any longer, I'll see you downstairs." she says smiling at me and making her way down the stairs.

I walk into the bathroom, shutting and locking the door behind me. billie is seriously so beautiful. maybe my mom was right about a fresh start. maybe this'll be exactly what I need.
