chapter two

we have been hanging out at the oconnell's for 2 ish hours now. my mom, partick, and maggie are all a couple of glasses of wine in and they are sitting talking on the patio. bella, finneas, billie, and I all moved upstairs to finneas's room to play the xbox.

"bro I thought you told me you were getting better at this game what the fuck happened." billie says laughing at finneas who is losing terribly in mario kart against bella. 

"cmon bella beat his ass." I say tapping her back.

"OH YEAH GUESS WHO LOST AGAIN?" bella says setting the controller down and standing up to get in finneas's face, causing all of us to laugh.

"fine I'll give it to you, you're good. but I promise you next time you're over here you're going down." finneas says giving bella a high five.

"im really craving takis so im going to run to the gas station real quick anyone want to come?" billie says standing up from the bed.

"im actually exhausted so I was planning to ask mom if we could go home." bella says standing up also.

"and I've got stuff to do pretty early tomorrow so im going to crash too." finneas says looking up at billie.

"I'll go with you! takis sound amazing." I say standing up and smiling at billie. 

"great." billie says smiling back at me.

we all head down the stairs. bella tells my mom she's ready to go home so her and both maggie and patrick head inside. everyone says their goodbyes and billie and I head out. she has a really nice car. she opens my car door for me and then heads over to the driver side. 

billie plugs her phone into the car and shuffles her playlist before driving off. 

"so how do you feel about moving?" billie says looking over at me then back at the road.

"I don't really know. im happy that we get a chance to have a fresh start. im also really glad that we moved right before bellas freshman year. the school she would've had to go to in washington was also my old high school and let me tell you, that place was brutal. im also happy that my moms happy." I say looking out of the window.

"bellas going to do great, she's a superstar. my mom has been super happy ever since she found out about you guys moving. its been really good to see her happy too." billie says with a soft smile. 

"so are you in college?" I ask looking over at her.

"yes im just here for summer. I go to ucla." she says.

"oh I'm starting at ucla in the fall also!" I say excitingly.

"you're going to love it. are you going to be living on campus?" 

"yes but I don't have any dorm arrangement stuff ready yet." I say sighing.

"well you should live with me! im getting an apartment right off campus and I've been looking for a roommate." billie says looking over at me smiling.

"I would love that."

after about a 10 minute drive and some more small talk, we arrive at the gas station. once we're parked, billie gets out and comes around to open my door. we head inside and both grab a bag of takis and a drink. once we pay we head back out to the car.

"want to go for a drive? I don't really want to go home yet." billie says as she buckles her seat belt.

"yes of course."

billie pulls out of the parking lot and begins driving. we're talking about school and a bunch of other random things. 

"one sec." billie says as she answers her buzzing phone.

"hi babe what's up?" she says into the phone

"where are you??" a girl says on the other end of the phone. 

"just driving around with a friend why?"

"who's your friend? are you fucking her?" the unknown girl says in a passive aggressive tone.

"no hannah what the fuck?" billie says 

"well let me know when you're done messing around we need to talk." the girl says followed by her hanging up before billie gets the chance to respond.

"who was that if u don't mind me asking?" I ask looking over at billie.

"my girlfriend hannah. im sorry about her, don't let her get to your head." she says meeting my glance.

"girlfriend? you're gay?" I say surprised.

"yup." billie says letting out a laugh.

"well she sounded kind of angry. is everything okay? you don't have to answer that if you don't want to im sorry." I say looking down at my fidgeting hands.

"she's like that. she thinks that im cheating on her with every girl that breathes. she also gets all pissy every time I hang out with someone. and quit apologizing avery its okay I promise." she says placing her hand on my arm sending a weird sensation throughout my body.

"well I don't mean to overstep but that doesn't sound healthy billie." I say looking over to her.

"I know its not but I can't- its complicated."

"I get it, its okay. would you mind taking me home? im exhausted." I say buckling my seat belt.

"yes of course."

billie starts driving to our neighborhood blasting her music on the way. once we get there, she parks at the end of my driveway and gets out of the car, opening my door for me.

"well I had a lot of fun. we need to make these little late night drives a thing." billie says closing the passenger door behind me.

"yes I would love that." I say looking up at her. 

we have quite a height difference. its sort of intimidating. 

"give me your number I'll text you tomorrow." billie says grabbing her phone out of her pocket.

I give her my number and she saves me as a contact, sending me a text so I can save her as one as well. 

"have a good rest of your night avery I'll talk to you tomorrow." she says pulling me in for a hug.

I hug her back tightly. I don't know why, but this hug felt different than normal. the feeling I was feeling in this moment was so incredibly unfamiliar.
