Chapter Six - Truth

Maria's POV

"Lark?"

Ignored.

"Lark?" I tried again. 

This time, there was a response as she looked over to me with no emotion in her soulless red eyes. She was sat in the far corner, watching my every move. 

"I...I thought I could find out a cure...I have never been so wrong in my god awful life." I told her through silent tears. I was too weak to cry real ones. "Is it possible that you were a nurse before this apocalypse?" I then asked her, "What makes you think that?" she asked me back, sitting up. "This." I simply said, referring to the tubes attached to my arms. It had been a couple of days now since they began to draw blood from me. Why couldn't they just bite me and be done with me?

"I worked in a blood bank. I wasn't really a nurse. I helped with saving a load of sick people, then one day, my assistant came into work pale as a ghost, and when I offered her my help to get her to the main hospital, she bit me right in the neck and the next thing I knew, I was biting everyone around me, spreading the gift." Lark explained the truth to me. 'Spreading the gift'? 

"What you are, it isn't a gift. The ones you infected, they are most likely dead." I told her, before immediately biting my own tongue. "I got no idea what happened to the ones I bit, but you know for a fact that Myla is alive. Even though our hearts are no longer beating, we still have feelings towards others, it may not seem like it now, but I do like your spirit, Maria." she told me back, before she stood up from the chair and came close to the cage, opening the door. 

I went to raise my arms.

"Don't." 

I stopped what I was doing, allowing Lark to get close to me, before she took out the thin tubes from my arms and sucked the blood from the thin tubes in front of me, causing me to feel sick in the stomach. "Myla is right about you. You do taste amazing." she told me, before she stepped out of the cage and purposely left the door open.

I could stay or I could go.
