Maria's POV

"If you were a Queen for one day, what would you do?" I asked Lark out of curiosity, softly rubbing her bare back as she laid on top of me. "I got no idea what I would do. Royalty isn't going to repair this world." she replied, before she placed a small kiss against my chest, then she moved onto the mattress and brought me close to her, wrapping her arm around me.

"What's the matter?" I decided to ask her, "Why do you have me so close to you?" I added.

"A blood moon is coming up." she told me. "Is that where the sky turns a dark shade of blood red?" I asked her, attempting to remember. "You saw one before?" she asked me, "It was a while ago. When they  were new." I told her. "I'm sorry that you had to witness that horror." she apologised to me, "Don't apologise. It wasn't you that killed them." I told her back.

"Your family...-"

"I am the only survivor. My family is gone. Dead."

"Friends?"

"Dead. I watched my last best friend get eaten and nearly ripped apart by them. I escaped by running away and stayed hidden for months until everything settled down." I told her.

Lark let out a small deep sigh, holding me closer. "I understand why you wanted to find a cure now." she then said, "It was never going to happen anyway." I said back quietly, resting my head against her chest.

"Thank you for being with me like this." Lark then decided to thank me after a couple minutes of silence. "I should be thanking you. I feel like I am human again." I told her back softly before we shared a kiss again, and then I closed my eyes for a little sleep.

That 'little sleep' turned into a deep sleep. I could feel Lark's protection, so I felt safe.

Until I woke up in the morning alone and Lark had left a note, saying that she had to stay away from me. She didn't want to hurt me on the blood moon. In her own words, on this tiny piece of paper;

"I do not recommend going back to your home. I don't want you to see us since it won't be us. We will be different people. Please try and find a safe guarded place by the end of tonight. You are too special, Maria."

"Shit..." I found myself saying out loud, "You didn't tell me that it was going to be this fucking soon, Lark..."

I had no idea how much time I got left, but I had to move quickly or else I was going to be their dinner.
