The days in mourning were long and suffocating. Her father-in-law, taking advantage of her vulnerable position, began to make unwanted advances. Xiū Huā resisted, aware of the dire consequences should she be cast out. Her family's reputation hinged on her compliance, and speaking out would only bring disgrace and disbelief.

Her mother-in-law, a stern woman hardened by years of enduring her husband's indiscretions, noticed the way his eyes wandered to Xiū Huā. She had surely been hurt before by her husband's lack of control, informed of his numerous affairs, some of which bordered on the taboo. Yet, to maintain her position and respect within the household, she had cultivated a hard exterior and a strict demeanor.

Recognizing that Xiū Huā had become her husband's new target, she withdrew any form of kindness from her in a bid to protect herself. She saw Xiū Huā as a threat, a potential cause of further disgrace and turmoil within the family. This added another layer of isolation and despair to Xiū Huā's already difficult situation, making her days even more unbearable.

She lived in constant fear, her spirit wilting under the weight of her circumstances.
