You dreaded this moment everyday.
Counting down the hours
every time you looked at the little watch
on your wrist,
a bad reminder of the fact that he would
be leaving you once again,
that he wouldn't be next to you when you woke up in bed for a drink in the middle
of the night or needed go to the toilet,
the dark shadows of the apartment
seemingly growing much bigger and scarier
when he wasn't there,
lurking around every corner.

You had started begging him months
ago to close the bedroom
door behind him when he left
and to check every closet to make sure
there weren't any scary monsters lurking there
like your little head
told you there might be.

"I've checked every corner of this room"
He told you firmly
as you stood by the door,
peeking inside of the bedroom suspiciously
like he didn't check it properly.
"I want you in bed,
alright?
I'm leaving soon.
I know you don't like it if daddy doesn't
see you before you go to sleep"

"Not sleep"
You breathed out,
looking up at him with little eyes.
"Too scary"

"Doll"An irritated sigh left his mouth as he took you into his arms

"Doll"
An irritated sigh left his mouth as
he took you into his arms.
"There's nothing here,
baby.
I've checked.
You wanted me to look in the closet,
I did.
There's nothing under the bed
and there's nothing in the bathroom"

"Is"
You insisted,
like you had seen them.
"Scary"

"No"
He warned you with his eyes,
placing you down onto the bed,
taking away his hand slowly so that your
little head had a soft landing
onto the pillow.

"There is nothing fucking scary.
You're gonna put ya little cartoons on
and forget about it,
hm?"

Pressing the remote into your little hands,
you took it,
hesitant to look to the right because
that corner was much darker than the left
and you never knew what was going
to be standing there.

"Daddy go?"
You asked him quietly.

"Yeah,
daddy's going sweetheart.
You call me if you need me,
but don't leave this bedroom unless you
need that or the bathroom.
I don't want you having a meltdown again
and locking yourself in the hallway closet
where I found you last night.
You got that?"

Nodding your little head,
you eyed the bookcase in the corner,
wondering if it would buy you some time
to put off him leaving
just a little longer.

"Story?"

"No,
Baby.
I just don't have time tonight,
huh?
I thought you liked your
nona doing that"

"I told her I wanted daddy to do it"You answered him in a small voice, pulling at heartstrings he didn't have

"I told her I wanted daddy to do it"
You answered him in a small voice,
pulling at heartstrings
he didn't have.

"Daddy doesn't do the voices"
He tried to find any excuse possible
to coax you into being a good girl for him,
to go to sleep without so much
drama from you.
"You don't like that,
remember?"

"That's otay"
You insisted,
a little expectant look in your eyes
as you laid there in your little pyjamas,
under the covers.
"I not mind"

"For fucks sake"
He muttered under his breath,
rolling his eyes at your little innocence
as he gave in to you,
taking one of your little picture books from the side,
getting onto the bed with you,
his back resting against the headboard
as you looked up at him so that he would lower
the book so that you could
see the pictures better,
a grin forming on his lips.
"You're a little brat,
you know that?
Daddy's sick to death of you slowing me down,
little girl"
