The helicopter roared through the sky, its rhythmic hum a stark contrast to the chaos that had unfolded on the ground. Inside, Major Jai and his trusted friend, Lieutenant Dev, sat amidst the disarray of medical supplies and the eerie silence that followed a battle. Jai's face was pale, his breathing labored as he slumped against the seat, his body a canvas of bruises and injuries.
Dev glanced at Jai with concern etched deeply into his features. “Hang in there, Jai. We’re almost there. Just a little longer, and we’ll have you sorted.”
Jai’s eyes fluttered open, a painful grimace crossing his face. “Dev... I need to talk to you. It’s important.”
Dev, his voice trembling slightly, tried to reassure him. “You’re going to be okay. Just focus on staying with me.”
But Jai’s grip on Dev’s arm tightened, a sign of the seriousness of his condition. “No, Dev. This is urgent. If... if I don’t make it, I need you to promise me something.”
Dev's heart sank. “Don’t talk like that, Jai. You’re going to make it through. We’ve got a team waiting for you.”
Jai’s voice was barely a whisper, struggling through the pain. “Promise me, Dev. Promise me you’ll look after Sanjana. She... she needs you.”
Dev’s eyes widened, the weight of Jai’s request hitting him like a tidal wave. “Jai, don’t say that. You’re going to be fine. We’ll get you through this.”
Jai’s breaths came in shallow gasps, each one a struggle. “I’m serious, Dev. I... I can’t guarantee I’ll make it. If I don’t... you need to be there for her. She’s... she’s lost so much.”
Dev’s voice broke, choked with emotion. “You’re not going to die, Jai. We’ll get you to the hospital, and you’ll be okay.”
Jai’s eyes, dimming with fatigue, locked onto Dev’s. “Promise me, Dev. Please. I need to know she’ll be taken care of.”
Dev’s resolve hardened as he fought back his own tears. “I promise, Jai. I’ll look after her. I’ll make sure she’s okay.”
Jai’s grip loosened as he slipped into unconsciousness, his body succumbing to the injuries that had plagued him. The helicopter’s interior was filled with the tense murmurs of the medical team as they rushed to stabilize him.
Dev watched helplessly as Jai’s condition worsened, the gravity of his promise weighing heavily on him. His thoughts raced, trying to prepare for the possibility that he might have to fulfill the promise sooner than he wanted.
The helicopter landed, and the medical team swiftly carried Jai out on a stretcher, their expressions grave. Dev followed closely, his mind consumed with the reality of what he might have to face. As he stepped into the hospital, he clung to the promise he’d made, determined to honor it no matter what the outcome.
For now, all he could do was hope. Hope that Jai would pull through and that he wouldn’t have to live with the burden of a promise made under the shadow of despair.
