The days continued to stretch on as Jai lay in his hospital bed, his condition remaining precarious despite the initial progress. The vibrant energy that once characterized him was now a distant memory, replaced by the harsh reality of his injuries and the relentless struggle to stay alive. Dev and Sanjana remained by his side, their hope and determination unwavering even as the situation grew increasingly dire.
One quiet evening, as the soft golden light of the setting sun filtered through the hospital room, Jai’s eyes fluttered open. His gaze, though tired, was clear and resolute. Dev sat by the bedside, a book in his hand, but his attention was solely on Jai.
Jai called out for his best friend “Dev...”
Dev looked up immediately, his face reflecting both exhaustion and concern. “Jai, you’re awake. How are you feeling?”
Jai said softly “Not great, but... that’s not why I called you. There’s something I need to ask.”
Dev’s heart skipped a beat, sensing the gravity of Jai’s tone. “What is it?”
Jai’s voice was weak, but his words carried the weight of his emotions. “You know... you’ve been a brother to me through all of this. And I know that... I might not have much time left.”
Dev's eyes brimmed with tears “Don’t talk like that, Jai. You’re going to get through this.”
Jai’s hand reached out, grasping Dev’s with a surprising strength. “I need to ask you something. For Sanjana... if I don’t make it... I need you to promise me something important.”
Dev’s throat tightened. “Whatever it is, just tell me. I’ll do it.”
Jai’s eyes, though dimmed by pain, held a fierce determination. “Promise me you’ll marry Sanjana. Take care of her. She’s been through so much, and she needs someone to be there for her. You... you’re the only one I trust to make sure she’s okay.”
Dev’s breath caught in his chest, the enormity of Jai’s request hitting him like a tidal wave. “Jai, this is—”
Jai gasped for air as he said“Please, Dev. I don’t want her to face the future alone. I know it’s a lot to ask, but I can’t bear the thought of her being left without someone who truly cares about her. You’re my best friend, and I trust you more than anyone.”
Dev’s eyes filled with tears as he struggled to process Jai’s words. The thought of marrying Sanjana, of taking on such a significant role in her life, was overwhelming, but Jai’s plea was earnest and heartfelt.
Dev held Jai's hand “Jai, I... I don’t know if I’m ready for this. But I can’t ignore your request. I promise you, I’ll do everything I can to take care of her. I’ll be there for her, just like you asked.”
Jai’s hand squeezed Dev’s briefly before falling back onto the bed. A faint smile crossed his lips, a mix of relief and sadness. “Thank you, Dev. I’m grateful... that she’ll have someone like you.”
The room was filled with a heavy silence, the gravity of the promise hanging between them. Sanjana, who had been quietly observing from the doorway, stepped forward, her eyes brimming with unshed tears.
Sanjana's eyes were full of remorse
“Jai, I... I don’t know what to say.”Jai’s gaze met hers, filled with a mixture of sorrow and hope. “Sanju, I’m sorry... that it had to come to this. But please know that my wish is for you to find happiness, even if I’m not there to see it.”
Sanjana’s voice trembled as she took Jai’s hand in hers. “I understand, Jai. I’ll honor your wish, even though it’s incredibly hard.”
As the evening turned into night, Dev and Sanjana sat beside Jai, their hearts heavy with the weight of the promises made and the uncertain future ahead. Jai’s breathing grew shallower, the strain of his injuries taking its toll.
Dev replied in a short sense “We’ll be here for you, Jai. Just focus on resting. We’ll figure everything out, together.”
Jai’s eyes closed once more, his exhaustion overtaking him. The room was filled with the soft beeping of the heart monitor and the quiet whispers of two people bound by love and duty, each grappling with the profound impact of Jai’s final request.
The future was uncertain, but for now, Dev and Sanjana clung to the hope that Jai’s sacrifice and their commitment to his wishes would guide them through the challenges that lay ahead.
