It was a lazy Saturday afternoon, the kind of day that seems tailor-made for lounging around the house and taking it easy. The sunlight streamed through the windows, casting soft golden hues across the living room floor as I tackled the mundane chores that had piled up during the week. Cleaning, washing, dusting-each task was methodical and repetitive, providing a comforting rhythm to my day. I had already finished my super short entry in the diary my grandma had given me, documenting last night's dream about the sun and moon. It wasn't much, just a few lines, but it felt good to have something written down.
With the chores behind me and no immediate obligations, I found myself sprawled out on my bed, phone in hand. The digital world was alive and buzzing as I scrolled through social media, liking and commenting on my friends' posts. Photos of brunches, vacations, and new pets filled my feed, each image a small glimpse into lives being lived elsewhere. It was a mindless distraction, but a pleasant one.
The familiar vibration of my phone against the wooden surface of my bedside table pulled me from my scrolling reverie. **Buzz. Buzz.** My phone flashed with the name "Cassie" on the screen-a call from one of my dearest friends, someone I cherished deeply. I scrambled to answer it, almost falling off my bed in my eagerness.
"Hello," Cassie's voice came through the line, bright and cheerful.
"Hello, Cassie!" I replied, a smile spreading across my face at the sound of her familiar voice.
"Guess what?!?!" she exclaimed, her excitement palpable even over the phone.
"I'm fine, thank you for asking. How are you? How is Zac?" I teased, knowing full well that her excitement would soon spill over and answer all my questions.
"Oh, doll, I'm fine, thanks," she said, pausing for dramatic effect. "Zac is no longer my boyfriend."
Her words hit me like a cold splash of water. Silence enveloped the moment as I processed what she had just said. Cassie and Zac were the "it" couple-high school sweethearts who had seemingly weathered every storm together. They were my relationship goals, and now this?
"What happened? Are you okay?" I asked, choosing my words carefully. I didn't want to upset her further.
"Oh well, one night at a restaurant I was with my cousin Lily. Then it happens." She paused again, building the suspense. I could almost hear her grin through the phone.
I took a deep breath, trying to gauge her mood. "Go on," I urged her gently.
"The whole band at the restaurant started to play 'Lover' by Tay Tay. I was shocked! Like, you know, that's the song I would say is ours, mine and Zac's song. Then he popped out in the most luxurious suite and kneeled down while opening a Tiffany ring box and asked me to marry him."
"Girl," I said, opting for restraint instead of swearing, knowing she was a bit sensitive to it. "You had me worried! So, I'm assuming he's your fiancé now?"
She giggled, a light, happy sound that told me everything I needed to know. "Well, actually, husband. We went to register our marriage the next day."
"No big wedding?" I asked, slightly surprised by the sudden turn of events.
"Nope, we can't afford a big wedding as raising kids are expensive."
"Hold on, Cassie Blake, are you telling you gave birth?" My voice was filled with disbelief and joy.
"Yes, and I would like you to be my kids' godmother."
"Wow, that's a lot to process. Congratulations! And I'm so ready to spoil your kids. Wait kids as in multiple? How old are they?"
"Twins and they are a full five months now," she replied, the pride evident in her voice.
"I am so happy for you," I said, feeling genuinely thrilled for her new chapter in life.
"So, we're having a last-minute kind of party for the wedding and the kids next weekend at Real Heaven, and you have to come. You can't say no."
Real Heaven was a seven-star restaurant I had always dreamed of visiting. I didn't hesitate because this was the perfect excuse to indulge in some luxury and see my best friend glowing with happiness. Zac had made a name for himself with his travel planner app, and from what I heard, business was booming.
"Will there be lobster?" I asked playfully, recalling that it was a specialty there.
"Yes, but girl, you're allergic to lobster. We'll have chicken, though," she answered with a laugh.
"I can work with that!" I said, matching her excitement.
We chatted a bit more, catching up on the little things and laughing at inside jokes. It was good to hear her so happy and vibrant, her voice brimming with excitement for what was to come. After a while, we said our goodbyes, and she hung up, leaving me alone in the quiet of my room.
Next weekend seemed destined to be a social day-a chance to reconnect and celebrate. I would be surrounded by familiar faces and maybe even some new ones, but for now, I needed to recharge my social battery. The prospect of a party was both thrilling and exhausting, and I knew I would need to be well-rested the week before.
I set my phone down, contemplating the whirlwind of events Cassie had just dropped into my lap. Her life had taken such a dramatic turn, and it made me reflect on my own. Perhaps there was more waiting for me out there, too, beyond the confines of my room and the pages of a diary filled with dreams.
With a resolve to avoid dark circles and tired eyes, I decided to turn in early. The evening air was cool as I pulled back the covers and settled into bed, my mind still buzzing with thoughts of tomorrow. I imagined the shimmering lights of Real Heaven, the laughter and clinking glasses, and the warmth of friends gathered in celebration. It was a night that promised memories to be cherished.
As I closed my eyes, a sense of anticipation filled me, a tingling feeling that something was shifting in the fabric of my own story. I drifted off to sleep with thoughts of lobsters and laughter, unaware of the stranger who would soon change everything and set my world spinning in a direction I never anticipated.
As I slept, I dreamed not of cosmic battles between sun and moon but of laughter, friendship, and the unknown paths ahead.
