Winter...
Selva got wind of Dashi's chit-chat with Ryla about her, and just like that, their friendship was toast, much to Peso's delight. With Dashi out of the frame, Peso saw his chance to swoop in. He's been feigning confusion in Math for months, flunking Calculus spectacularly, all to win Selva's heart. He's determined to do whatever it takes to be her guy.
Dashi, on the other hand, was steaming like a latte with extra foam. Who spilled the beans about her gossiping? Shellington was acting innocent, not admitting to any tea-spilling, while Barnacles kept out of the drama. The Winter's Talent Show at Northshore was looming, and The Plastics were prepping their same old dance routine. It's the kind of old that's new every time, at least to them.
Checking her reflection, Dashi was none too pleased to see a breakout staring back at her. Half in costume, with sweatpants and a messy bun, she looked like she'd been through a fashion blender.
Dashi exclaimed in frustration, pointing at the zit on her face, "Do you see this?"
Shellington, attempting to console her, replied, "I don't see it."
With a piercing glare, Dashi bit into her Kalteen Bar—her sole sustenance since Peso introduced them to her.
Peso, feigning reassurance, fibbed, "It's okay, Dashi. It's just a typical response to the Kalteen Bar. You puff up initially, then the fat converts to water, leading to water weight. That's when the excess water helps flush out toxins, causing breakouts. But soon, you'll shed weight effortlessly."
Dashi and the others exchanged puzzled glances, particularly Dashi, who then inquired, "Do people in Antarctica speak Spanish?"
"I'm not from the Antarctic, I'm from the Falkland Islands in South America," Peso clarified.
"Zip it!" Dashi interjected with a huff. "These Kalteen Bars are terrible, and so are you!"
With that, Dashi stormed off, chomping on another piece of the detested candy bar. Peso turned to Barnacles, bewildered.
"What's got her so riled up?" Peso inquired.
Barnacles, mid-spray of his deodorant, explained, "Well, Selva caught wind of the gossip that she's got seeds for brains. And ever since you introduced her to Kalteen Bars, she's been gobbling them down non-stop. I'm pretty sure she hasn't had a bathroom break in a couple of days."
Dashi came back with the skirt part of her costume, she was struggling with it to keep it on, Shellington, Barnacles, and Peso were wearing theirs. All four of them were wearing matching Santa Claus costumes, only Dashi was wearing a mini-skirt, and the three boys were wearing red Santa pants, but the four of them were all going to wear Santa Hats to match.
"Why is this skirt so tight?" Dashi said,
"Maybe, it is because your body is maturing?" Peso said with a slight smile,
Dashi glared at Peso through the mirror as she saw how Barnacles made his costume,
"Why are you not wearing a shirt?" Dashi said,
"It's on Purpose." Barnacles grin.
"For a guy that slept with the whole cheer squad, you are definitely nailing it," Dashi said, sarcastically,
Barnacles stood there, jaw practically hitting the floor in utter shock. He slowly craned his neck towards Shellington, the sole confidant of his secret.
"I...I..." Shellington stammered, his voice quivering, "I think your costume looks... Fetch."
"SHELLINGTON!" Dashi exploded in a fit of rage, "STOP TRYING TO MAKE 'FETCH' HAPPEN! IT'S NOT GOING TO HAPPEN!"
With that, Dashi stormed out, the door banging shut with a force that echoed betrayal. Barnacles felt a sting of treachery, Shellington was on the brink of tears, and Peso... well, Peso was just trying to figure out how on earth they all managed to tolerate Dashi's dramatic exits.
...
The Winter Talent Show was unfolding with flair; each student showcased their unique talents. After the abrupt end to Kevin G and the Power of Three's act, it was time for Peso and The Plastics to take the stage. Tweak and Kwazii were buzzing with anticipation for Peso's number.
"Alright," announced Principal Inkling, "Should anyone come across an aqua-colored retainer case, kindly return it. It's mine. Now, our next act is..."
Inkling peered at the slip of paper clutched in his tentacle, his expression dropping to one of weary familiarity.
"Santa's Helper performing 'Rockin' Around the Pole'," he declared.
As the curtains lifted, applause and cheers filled the air. Kwazii and Tweak exchanged knowing looks and an eye roll; the choreography was all too familiar. Tweak and Dashi had performed it before, and it seemed old news to her now. The parents' faces were a mix of amusement and mild shock at the 'creative' dance, while Peso's mother looked utterly flabbergasted. Amidst the unconventional moves, Kwazii and Tweak snickered, unable to contain their amusement.
"Thank you, next!" Kwazii muttered, barely containing his laughter.
The performance was proceeding smoothly until Shellington misstepped, inadvertently pulling Dashi's skirt, leading to their joint tumble on stage. Barnacles and Peso, attempting to avoid the mishap, found themselves in disarray as Barnacles also fell, leaving Peso the sole upright figure. The audience, previously admiring, erupted into laughter, leaving Dashi feeling an unprecedented level of humiliation as she faced the crowd. Meanwhile, Tweak observed the chaos with a sense of fulfillment, mentally ticking off an item from her 'revenge party' checklist. The plan had been set in motion: first, to fracture the friendship between Dashi and Selva, then to dismantle her 'Snatchin' Body' reputation. The final act of vengeance, turning her 'Army of Guys' against her, was unfolding slowly and painfully, yet for Tweak, the end justified the means.
