Chapter 12: Cold Comfort and Heated Crescendos

The locker room was a whirlwind of chaos and clamor after the game, with jubilant celebrations and frustrated grumbling from the opposing team. Amidst the noise, my focus was on Kenji, who stood by one of the lockers, his expression a mix of anger and exhaustion. His hands and face were scraped and bruised, a stark reminder of the intensity of the fight.

I moved through the crowd and approached him. "Kenji, let me take a look at those wounds," I said, trying to sound calm despite the whirlwind of emotions inside me.

He nodded, slumping onto the bench. As I examined his hands, applying antiseptic to the abrasions, Coach Shimura's voice cut through the noise like a sharp blade.

"Sato!" Coach Shimura boomed, his face a mask of fury. "What the hell were you thinking? This kind of behavior is unacceptable!"

Kenji winced, avoiding Shimura's gaze. "Coach, I-"

"Don't try to justify it," Shimura snapped. "You've added more fuel to the fire with that outburst. This isn't just about you; it's about the team. If you can't control your temper, you have no place on this team."

Kenji's shoulders sagged, his frustration evident. "I'm sorry, Coach. I just-"

"Sorry isn't going to cut it," Shimura cut him off. "You need to learn discipline and respect. Manage these situations better, or there will be consequences. Understand?"

Kenji nodded silently, his face red with a mix of anger and embarrassment. Shimura gave one last disappointed look before striding away, leaving Kenji and me alone in the quiet locker room.

Kenji sat heavily on the bench, his eyes filled with frustration. I felt a pang of empathy. This was more than just a professional setback for him; it was deeply personal.

I carefully examined his hands and face, noting the swelling and abrasions. I began to clean and dress the wounds, working methodically to soothe the pain and minimize the damage.

"Can you tell me what happened?" I asked, glancing up at him as I applied antiseptic to a particularly nasty cut.

Kenji sighed heavily, his shoulders slumping slightly. "The catcher started making these disgusting remarks about you. I lost my temper and, well, things escalated."

I continued to work on his hands, trying to keep my voice steady. "What kind of remarks?"

He hesitated for a moment, then spoke through gritted teeth. "He was saying awful things-insults about you, questioning your professionalism, making crude comments about your intentions."

My heart ached at the thought of anyone speaking about Kenji in such a degrading manner, let alone about me. I had hoped that such vile talk was something that happened only in the fringes of the sport, but here it was, directly impacting someone I cared about.

"I'm sorry you had to deal with that," I said softly, trying to offer some comfort. "It's unacceptable and unfair."

Kenji's gaze softened as he met my eyes. "I didn't want to bring you into this. I just couldn't stand hearing those things about you."

I finished bandaging his hands and gave him a reassuring smile. "I appreciate that, but it's important to address these issues properly. Fighting won't change what they think. We need to focus on moving forward."

Kenji looked away, his frustration evident. "I know. I just felt so helpless."

"You're not helpless, Kenji. You're strong, and you've shown that on and off the field. We'll handle this, but you need to channel that anger into something constructive," I placed a hand gently on his arm. "Although, I hadn't realized they still talk shit about me for what happened before."
