Chapter 11: Between the Bases and the Backlash
The anticipation for the next game was palpable as the Yomiuri Giants prepared to face off against one of their biggest rivals. The atmosphere in the training center was electric, with players gearing up for the challenge ahead. Despite the earlier tension, Kenji was adamant about playing in the upcoming game, his determination evident in every stride he took.
Kenji approached me in the training room, a determined look in his eyes. “Asami, I need to talk to you.”
I looked up from the treatment table where I was organizing some equipment. “What’s on your mind, Kenji?”
He rotated his shoulder, wincing slightly but quickly masking the discomfort. “I’m feeling much better. The soreness is almost gone. I want to play in the next game.”
I studied him carefully, noting the subtle signs of lingering pain. “Kenji, I know you’re eager to get back on the field, but we need to make sure you’re fully healed. Pushing yourself too soon could lead to a more serious injury.”
Kenji’s expression softened slightly, but his resolve remained firm. “I understand your concern, but I’ve been following the recovery plan closely. I’ve been working hard to get back to this point. The team needs me out there.”
I sighed, torn between my professional judgment and his unwavering determination. “I’ll need to assess your shoulder again. If there’s any sign of lingering issues, you’ll need to sit this one out.”
Kenji nodded, his eyes pleading. “I trust you, Asami. Just give me a chance.”
I motioned for him to sit on the treatment table and began a thorough examination of his shoulder. Kenji winced a few times, but overall, his range of motion and strength had significantly improved. While there were still traces of tenderness, it was clear he had made substantial progress.
After the assessment, I met his gaze, my expression serious. “You’ve improved a lot, Kenji. But there’s still some risk involved. If you play, you need to promise me that you’ll listen to your body and not push yourself beyond your limits.”
Kenji nodded earnestly. “I promise, Asami. I’ll be careful.”
I took a deep breath, feeling the weight of the decision. “Alright. I’ll talk to Coach Shimura and see if we can come up with a plan that minimizes the risk.”
Kenji’s face lit up with gratitude. “Thank you, Asami. I won’t let you down.”
I left the training room and found Coach Shimura in his office, reviewing game strategies. I knocked on the door, and he looked up, motioning for me to enter.
“Coach, we need to talk about Kenji,” I said, my voice steady.
Shimura’s expression darkened slightly. “Is he still insisting on playing?”
I nodded. “Yes, but I’ve assessed his shoulder, and he’s made significant progress. He’s almost back to full strength. There’s still some risk, but he’s determined to play, and I believe he can handle it if we manage his time carefully.”
Coach Shimura leaned back in his chair, considering my words. “Asami, you know I’m concerned about him pushing too hard and getting hurt again. We can’t afford to lose him for the rest of the season.”
“I understand, Coach. That’s why I’m suggesting we limit his playtime. We can have him start the game, but if there’s any sign of discomfort, we pull him out immediately. We need to monitor him closely and ensure he doesn’t overexert himself.”
