Chapter Fourteen: The Discomfort of Familiarity

The day started with a renewed sense of purpose after our lazy morning and delightful breakfast. Kenji's presence made everything feel lighter, as if the burdens of the past were just whispers in the wind. But as the new week began, reality set in.

I arrived at the training center early, my mind focused on the day’s tasks. The usual hustle and bustle of the team preparing for practice filled the air. I was making my way to the therapy room when I saw Coach Shimura approaching, his expression serious.

“Asami, we need to talk,” he said, motioning me to follow him.

I felt a knot tighten in my stomach, anticipating the news about my father’s visit. We walked to his office in silence, the weight of the conversation we had the previous evening lingering between us. Once inside, Coach Shimura closed the door and turned to face me.

“He’s here,” he said simply.

I took a deep breath, steadying myself. “Where is he?”

“He’s in the locker room, talking to the players,” Shimura replied. “I thought you’d want to know before you saw him.”

I nodded, appreciating the heads-up. “Thanks, Coach. I’ll handle it.”

With a final nod, I left his office and headed toward the locker room. The closer I got, the louder the voices became, echoing off the walls. I paused just outside the door, taking a moment to gather my thoughts.

Pushing open the door, I stepped inside and was immediately met with the sight of my father, Akihiro Nakashima, surrounded by players. His presence commanded attention, just as it always had. He was a tall, imposing figure, his once-black hair now streaked with silver, but his eyes were still sharp and intense.

“Asami,” he called out, his voice firm and steady, causing the players to turn and look at me with surprise.

“Dad,” I replied, trying to keep my tone neutral. “What brings you here?”

He stepped forward, a smile that didn't quite reach his eyes. “I wanted to check in on my daughter and see how the team’s doing.”

The players exchanged glances, clearly taken aback. Kenji, standing at the back, straightened up, his gaze shifting between my father and me.

One of the players, Toshi, spoke up, breaking the silence. “Wait, you’re Asami’s father?”

My father nodded, his expression proud. “Yes, I am. Akihiro Nakashima, former coach and current advisor to several teams. And Asami is my daughter.”

The revelation hung in the air, and I felt a mix of embarrassment and frustration. My father’s introduction felt more like a declaration of ownership than anything else.

“Well, I hope you all get along and listen to Asami. She’s more than capable,” he continued, his eyes locking onto mine.

I forced a smile, trying to maintain my composure. “Thanks, Dad. I’m sure the players will appreciate your advice.”

There was an awkward silence, the players unsure how to react. Kenji’s gaze was intense, his concern evident.

“Well, I’ll leave you all to it,” my father said, turning to address the players. “Remember, discipline and dedication are key. And listen to Asami—she knows what she’s doing.”

With that, he walked past me, giving my shoulder a brief squeeze. I stiffened at the touch, memories of our strained relationship flooding back. As soon as he was out of the room, the players began to disperse, their murmurs filling the air.
