What was that loud thud?
Grabbing a knife from the kitchen, I rushed toward my room. With each step, a sense of danger crept over me. It was terrifying, being the only one here. What if someone climbed through the window and was now lurking in my room, waiting to attack me? Was this my last day on earth? Should I call the police, my parents, or the neighbors? My fear alone might be enough to do me in.
Holding the knife in my right hand and the doorknob with my left, I opened the door. Silence. No one was there, but I couldn’t be sure. I crept toward the bed and quickly scanned the room. No one.
I decided to check the bathroom. I opened the door, but it was empty, too. Returning to my room, I noticed the window was open, and a ball—a squeeze ball—lay on the floor. It must have been the kids playing outside. I tossed the ball back out the window and collapsed onto my bed, deciding I should probably just sleep.

The doorbell rang.
Who could it be now?
It was 9 in the evening. I must have slept too long. It was probably Mom and Dad at the door. I opened the door, and sure enough, it was them, bringing dinner. Not just for me, but for all of us—a family dinner.
We ate together, Mom, Dad, and me.
"How was the test, Fred?" Mom asked as I got up to head to my room after dinner.
"I think it went well," I replied.
"Okay."
I hurried from the living room to my room. Talking with my mom about school always made me uneasy. That day when she saw Evan at our house, she didn’t ask me any questions about her or about what Miss Sam had told her. I don’t know exactly what Miss Sam said, but I suspect she misunderstood something and told Mom about it.
Feeling in a better mood, I decided to start studying. I opened my laptop and the program. It greeted me with, "WELCOME AGAIN, I HOPE YOUR TEST WENT WELL AND YOU HAD A GOOD DAY AS WELL. NOW I THINK WE SHOULD START OUR NEW CHAPTERS, OUR NEW JOURNEY AND I HOPE YOU WILL BE WITH ME TILL THE END."
I think, I—will be with you till the end.
It's funny how it always has the same message, "I hope you will be with me till the end." That explains why the program is called "BE WITH ME."
