That afternoon, Liora pulls me aside.

"I have to go check on some things. It shouldn't affect the binding spell, but you might feel a little weird."

"I'm sure I'll be fine."

She's always thinking about other people.

"Why don't you take a break while I'm gone. You've been on your feet all day."

That does sound nice. Liora disappears, and I look around. The dining room and the coffee bar are both packed, and the kitchen isn't exactly a place you hang out. Then I remember the storage room. Perfect! I had inside, but to my surprise, I'm not alone. sitting on one of the loose crates, a cup of tea next to her, is Emeril.

"Oh, sorry, am I interrupting?"

Emeril Shakes her head at once and pats the crate beside her.

"I'd actually love some company. I usually eat in here since it's out of the way, but it can be kind of lonely."

"Given how busy you are, I would have thought you'd welcome a bit of quiet time."

Emeril Grins.

"Sometimes I do, but there's a difference between talking to customers and talking to friends."

I unwrap the almond croissant I grabbed from the pastry counter and bite down, letting the sweet marzipan filling melt in my mouth.

"It sucks about that new cafe, huh? I wish I'd been there when you found out."

"It's terrible. I really hate the idea of a big chain coming in and taking over."

Emeril nods and rests her chin on her hands.

"I know I'm only a part time worker, but I wish I could help more."

"I don't think Liora thinks that way. I'm sure she appreciates everything you do."

Emeril Smiles at me.

"You notice how kind she is, huh?"

"You have to be completely stupid not to notice."

Emeril Laughs.

"She knows my family, and I knew her before I worked here. I've always kind of idolised her."

"I can imagine that."

Liora is the kind of person who inspires those around her without even trying.

"But that just makes me want to do something to help out even more. I even thought about using my magic to make everyone who visits the other cafe sad."

"You could do that? Do you have charm magic like Runa?"

Emeril Blinks, then shakes her head and smiles.

"Right, you don't know about magic. No, Runa and I are very different."

She locks her fingers together, creating a bridge with her arms.

"Charm magic creates a connection between the caster and the target. It can share life, like the turnips, or make Someone Like You."

"That seems powerful. And dangerous."

Emeril Grins.

"Exactly. My magic is much simpler. It just makes your mood change. Happy to sad, angry to calm, like that."

That's not that simple.

"Is mood magic a rare talent?"

Emeril Shakes her head.

"there's much rarer stuff, like Liora's healing or zains dark magic."

"Well, as a human, I think your power is pretty cool."
