Hours after the interrogation, Dennie and Xavier found themselves outside the pizzeria, the night air thick with the scent of rain-soaked asphalt and refuse. The alleyway was dimly lit by a single flickering streetlamp, casting long, eerie shadows that danced across the graffiti-covered walls. Xavier, leading the way with a cautious yet determined stride, spoke in a low voice that seemed to merge with the ambient sounds of the city. "We're gonna check the bags around here. You never know. We've seen cases where people hide bodies in bags," he said, his tone suggesting the gravity of their task.
Dennie nodded in agreement, his eyes scanning the dark corners of the alley. "True. Let's check then," he replied, his voice tinged with a mixture of anticipation and dread.
As they navigated the narrow, damp passageways, Xavier attempted to lighten the oppressive mood with a sarcastic comment. "Smells pretty good back here, yeah?" he remarked, wrinkling his nose at the pungent odor of decaying food and mildew.
Dennie matched his tone with a wry smile, rolling his eyes in mock exasperation. "Can't get enough," he replied, pulling on his gloves with a resigned sigh.
The two detectives began sifting through the bags of garbage, their expressions serious and focused. Most of the bags contained nothing more than filthy refuse, discarded pizza boxes, and other detritus from the pizzeria. However, Xavier soon came across something that caught his eye—a Freddy Fazbear plushie, its cheerful face a stark contrast to the grim surroundings. "Heh. Finders keepers," he remarked, holding it up briefly before tossing it aside, the plushie landing with a soft thud on the wet pavement.
The mood shifted abruptly when they spotted a dark, dried fluid seeping from one of the bags. The stench hit them before they even reached it—an overwhelming, nauseating odor of decay that made Xavier gag involuntarily. Dennie looked at him, his face pale and uneasy. They approached the bag with a sense of foreboding, and Xavier, bracing himself for the worst, gingerly opened it.
Inside was a horrifying sight: the rotting corpse of a dog, its body twisted and lifeless, the fur matted with blood and other fluids. The sight and smell were almost unbearable, a sickening testament to the cruelty of whoever had done this. Xavier took out his camera and snapped a photo, his hands surprisingly steady despite the revulsion churning in his stomach. "Shit... a dead dog. One of the employees did this for sure," Dennie muttered, his voice tinged with anger and disgust, his eyes narrowing as he stared at the gruesome discovery.
Xavier's mind raced with possibilities, his thoughts dark and chaotic. "You think the guy who took... KILLED... the missing kids did this too?" he asked, his tone dark and filled with a sense of impending doom.
Dennie nodded slowly, his face grim and set in a hard line. "Yeah. It's a messed-up individual, that's for sure. The kind of person who could do this... they're capable of anything," he replied, his voice barely above a whisper, the weight of their task pressing heavily on his shoulders.
They stood there for a moment, the gravity of their discovery settling in like a thick fog. The presence of the dead dog was a chilling reminder of the cruelty and depravity they were up against, suggesting that whoever was behind the disappearances had a history of violence and sadism. This wasn't just about missing children; it was about uncovering the dark, twisted mind of a killer who was capable of unimaginable horrors.
"We need to report this," Xavier said, breaking the heavy silence. "It's evidence, and it might lead us to something more," he added, his voice firm and resolute.
Dennie agreed, his face set in determined lines. "Yeah. And we need to keep digging. Whoever did this is still out there, and we need to stop them before they strike again," he replied, his eyes burning with a fierce resolve.
