Marc took a deep breath. "There's more you need to know. I wasn't just a civilian. I was an in a secret group of agent working for our government organization. My missions were classified, and my identity had to remain hidden. I was on a covert operation when we met." And I fell in love with you but I couldn't tell you my past.I felt a chill run down my spine. "A secret government organization? What kind of missions did you do?"
"We were tasked with eliminating individuals deemed a threat to national security," he explained, his voice low and serious. "Traitors, spies, anyone who could compromise the safety of our country. I wasn't working alone—I had a team, including a partner, a woman. I can't disclose her name, but she was crucial to our operations."
My head was spinning with the revelation. "Why are you telling me this now? Why involve me at all?"
"Because I trust you," Marc said earnestly. "You're the only one I trust. I contacted you because I knew you'd have the skills and the determination to uncover the truth. I was betrayed from within, and they pinned the murders on me to cover their tracks."
The gravity of his words sank in, and I realized the enormity of the situation. "Marc, if what you're saying is true, then we're dealing with something far bigger than just clearing your name. This is about exposing a conspiracy at the highest levels."
He nodded. "Exactly. And that's why you need to be careful. They will do anything to keep this secret. You're putting yourself in danger by helping me."
"I'm already in this, Marc," I said firmly. "I won't back down. We'll find a way to prove your innocence and bring the real culprits to justice."
I took a deep breath, trying to process everything. "Do you have any proof of what you're saying? Anything that can help me build a case?"
Marc looked down, a shadow crossing his face. "The missions were secret. We didn't leave any proof behind. That's how they were able to frame me so easily. They manipulated the evidence to make it look like I was the killer. I don't know how they did it, but they had the resources to make it convincing."
Desperation crept into my voice. "There must be something, Marc. Anything at all."
He shook his head slowly. "I wish I had more to give you. All I have is my word and whatever memories I can share with you. It's not much, but it's all we've got."
As our time came to an end, I placed the phone back on its cradle, my mind a whirlwind of thoughts. The visit had left me with more questions than answers, but it had also ignited a fire within me. I was determined to uncover the truth, no matter the cost. As I walked out of the prison, I knew that this case was about more than just saving Marc. It was about exposing a dark conspiracy and restoring justice, not only for Marc but for all those who had been wronged.
Leaving the prison, I resolved to delve deeper into Marc's past, to find anyone who might corroborate his story. If there were no official records, I'd have to rely on the human element—the memories, the experiences, and the connections that couldn't be erased or fabricated.
