"Take a little time to smile. Make a little thing worthwhile. When the moon comes up and the sun goes down, take a little time to smile.." Namiko sung along with Peggy Lee while her grandmother hummed with the live orchestra that performed the song a few yards away from them.
"Thank you dear." Her light voice was barely heard above the music as she watched Namiko refill her cup of hot tea.
"Be careful Nonna. Don't burn yourself." Namiko helped her place the cup to her lips since she was too weak to do it herself. Her frail shaking hands made things no easier.
"You always make the best tea." Once she was satisfied, Nonna Mae put the cup down on the saucer plate.
"Well I did learn from the best. The best being you, by the way." She clarified in case it wasn't already clear, earning a smile from Mae.
Namiko gazed down at the stack of papers in front of her while a heavy sigh pushed through her lips, accompanying the small frown that now rested on her face. She was so tired of writing her signature on papers. She'd done it at least a million times just in the last three days.
"Queen Namiko, any special requests for lunch?" One of the cooks bowed immediately upon approaching her.
"Nonna, what would you like today?" She asked her grandmother.
"Nonna?" She called again when she didn't receive an answer, and she had to gently tap her hand to get her attention.
"What would you like for lunch?" Namiko repeated.
"Hmm... roasted egg, tomatoes and avocado over toast with a bit of black pepper.. and a side of smoked cod and corn salsa." Nonna Mae stared into the distance as she gave her order.
"Oh my, Nonna! Look at you." Namiko smiled. She was shocked but mostly very proud at how Mae formed such a strong and coherent sentence. She was normally quite woozy and off somewhere in her head.
"I'll have the same. But I don't want any tomatoes because they've been quite slimy recently. Will you tell the chef? I believe there's more fresh ones in the garden.. for Nonna. If you get some that aren't slimy then perhaps I'll eat a few of those. Sliced thin, please." She told the cook.
"Of course, Queen Namiko. We will pick fresh ones right away." He bowed once more, and she thanked him before going back to what she was doing.
"I love spending time with you Nonna. Do you know that? You are like my only friend. Who else would distract me while I'm supposed to be signing literal laws into place for the kingdom?"
"You need real friends, child. You are far too young to be with an 87 year old every day."
"I know. I wish I had some..well, sometimes I do. Paige kind of ruined it for me though. Now I'll always think that the girls in the village just want to be my friend because I'm Queen of San Senova. I want them to be my friend just because I'm Namiko..you know?"
