Isaiah reached over to grab his phone from the dresser, laying his thumb on the power button to shut his alarm off. He honestly would never be able to get used to that excruciatingly annoying sound. It sure got him up and moving every time it rang though.
"Lay with me for a few more minutes Zay." Small arms wrapped around his back from behind as soon as he raised up from lying against the pillows.
He turned over to face her and pulled her body closer to his, wrapping her up in a bear hug. She smiled at the kiss he left on her forehead as she returned the hug around his neck. Then, she made herself comfortable on his chest, savoring his warmth since he would be gone for damn near the rest of the day.
"I didn't even hear you come in last night. Did you eat your food that I left on the counter?" She asked.
"Zeno got to it before I did. Knocked the whole plate on the ground." He chuckled, referring to their 98lb Cane Corso that laid at the foot of the bed.
"I'm so sick of his ass." His girlfriend, Aubrey, sucked her teeth in playful annoyance. She knew better than to leave food out though.
"I was too tired to eat anyway. I stayed late last night to finish up my cases from last week and I done already picked up another one." He never really expected to take breaks between cases but he'd been unusually busy lately; back to back cases with no time to rest.
"Yeah? You think you'll be able to finish the new one fast or it's gonna take a while?"
"I don't even know. I was only briefed a lil' bit 'cause I was too irritated to deal with her. I think she might be retarded or somethin'. Might even be a crackhead. Her ass was buggin' the whole time talkin' 'bout how she a queen and a minister sent her to us. Crazy shit." He shook his head thinking about his newest client.
"And you still gone take her?" Aubrey laughed at the sudden frustration in his voice.
"Yeah. She already paid and you know I gotta soft spot for lil' girls." He rubbed over the emerald green heart locket on his necklace that held some of the ashes of his late daughter.
"I need to get moving though. I gotta be at court by 10." He tapped her arm that was locked around his torso, and Aubrey watched him raise up from the bed to head to the bathroom. The mere mention of his daughter always caused an immediate drop in his mood.
Isaiah completed his morning routine in silence alongside his girlfriend, remaining mostly quiet even when she tried to start a conversation on a completely different subject. He was now in his head and that was his least favorite place to be. Grief sucked.
Some days were great, some were ok, and some were unnecessarily hard to get through. He wondered how today would go since it was starting off kind of hard.
"Can I get a kiss before you go baby?" Aubrey asked from the kitchen, noticing that he was about to walk out of the front door.
"I wish you felt comfortable enough to talk to me instead of shutting down." She looked up at him after he gave her a kiss, holding on to his arms.
