MONTH: END OF JULY: SEASON: SUMMER

⋄⋆⋆⋄⋄⋆⋆⋄

JOCELYN rose early in the morning, just as the sun began to peek through the clouds

With each step, the floor underneath her creaks as she makes her way to her bathroom. She enjoys the tranquility of her home as she brushes her teeth. She had always loved how comforting the mornings were, the world still asleep and unaware.

Her hair is tied up in a bun next, making sure to pull it extra tight before she pulls on her jeans and tank top. She decided to forgo breakfast as she descended the stairs, filling Buckly's bowl of dog food and 'booping' him on the nose before setting her sights on the front door. She quickly puts on her boots and the jacket that is hanging on the knob before venturing outside.

Her boots get wet in the grass as she walks, the morning air thick with dew. She enjoys how the main roads were lit with fairy lights under the early sky, the sound of people walking to work, and the taverns opening up. She sparked up her joint on the way, her morning ritual before patrol.

It had been three weeks since Jocelyn spent that night at Ellie's—the month of July was nearly over. Since then, Jocelyn and Maria have done a lot of talking, a lot.

Jocelyn hadn't spoken about her emotions this much since she was a child. It made her nauseous at times, her stomach feeling uneasy whenever she expressed the way she felt. But Maria listened and in return Jocelyn was patient. They were finally making progress. They were back to how things were when she was younger. She had her mom again.

Of course, Maria still wasn't thrilled about the notion of Jocelyn doing patrols, but after hours of debating with Tommy and Joel, she consented, realizing she couldn't keep the girl isolated here.

But only under one restriction: she was not allowed to dwell in the woods or leave Wyoming. That was the bargain, and Jocelyn reluctantly accepted. It seems that she would have to stay in Jackson for a little while longer. The old mill house would always be there waiting for her.

"Hey there," Dina seems to appear out of thin air at her side, joining her stride toward the stables.

"Mornin'," She replies, greeting her friend. "Want some?"

Dina shakes head. "Jesse gets on my ass when I'm high on patrol."

"Suit yourself."

Because of Joss's absence for two weeks, she had been replaced as Dina's partner. Jesse taking her spot these days, much to Jocelyn's dismay.

The two girls stop, letting a group of children run across in front of them before continuing, falling into casual conversation.

"Where are you stationed today?"

"East end, only thing Maria would let me take. Nothing fucking over there."

"Then count yourself lucky. Did you hear Eugene's going solo?"

"What happened to Jimmy?"

"Kicked the bucket. Said he was too old for this shit. Or so he told Jesse."

"Who do you think is gonna replace him?"

Dina shrugs, "Could be anyone."

"It better be me. I would rather have his stoner ass than do one more of these stupid morning runs with Cassie."
