The sound of banging noises woke Storm up with a start. His vision was still as blurry as it was when he tried to escape the burning den. As his vision became more clear, he saw that the banging noises were bones hanging from the ceiling on a vine, the breeze flowing in and hitting the bones, banging them all together.
Storm blinked himself awake. He lifted his head to look around, feeling dizzy. Managing, he find himself inside a cave. He was stunned when he noticed that he was lying on a bunch of huge leaves. Palm tree leaves. He’s never seen such leaves before. In fact, he’s never seen any leaves before, besides the ferns that were right outside the den before it caught on fire.
When Storm’s senses were cleared, He glanced around the cave once more. The cave was wide and the walls were russet. There was a pile of freshly killed prey and bones. Suddenly Storm’s stomach growled. He stared at the pile hungrily. Without thinking, he trotted towards the pile waiting patiently for him.
There were many options to pick from. Mice, rabbits, dassies, birds, and even deer. Storm picked the rabbit, since it was his favourite prey. He devoured the rabbit like he hadn't eaten in months. He ate with his eyes closed, enjoying every second of it.
“Hey, kid.”
Storm flung his head around, hearing the sudden voice. He met eyes with a tough and strong looking male wolf. His fur was black, with a white tail tip. He stood there like a royal. Storm shrunk as he stared at the male wolf.“You do know that it’s very rude to eat someone else's food without permission, right?” He asked rhetorically.
Storm lowered his ears feeling both frightened and ashamed. But that changed as the male wolf suddenly smiled, “It’s alright, you can have it. But just keep that fact in mind, will you?”
Storm couldn’t tell if that was another rhetorical question. But he nodded anyway. He suddenly didn’t feel hungry anymore, instead watched the male wolf walk towards him. He backed up as the wolf got close. The male wolf faced him again, “You look frightened. What is it that’s bothering you?”
He blinked, recovering himself from his shock, “nothing, I… I’m alright,” he stammered. The male wolf only shrugged, “Name’s Blayze, by the way,” he introduced. Storm felt a little more comfortable now, “Storm,” he introduced back. Blayze nodded at the name, “Storm. What a strong name. Wish I had a name like that, ” he complimented. Storm smiled. Things weren’t that bad with Blayze, even though he looked like he was of royal lineage.
Storm glanced at the noisy bones hanging from the roof of the cave in wonder, then back at Blayze, "what's with the bones?"
Blayze glanced at the bones, then smiled before replying, "it's bones from my first dear kill."
Storm blinked at him for a few moments. Dear was incredibly difficult to hunt as a wolf, often only possible when hunting as a pack. "so, you have a pack?" he asked.
Blayze shook his head with a grin, "nope. Never had, never will. I'm a loner."Storm stared at him in disbelief. You must be impossibly strong to kill a dear on your own without loosing a limb. But what really confused him was how the heck did it get on the roof? Before he could ask, Blayze continued, "though that was a long time ago," his grin returned to a faint smile, "it's old news now."
Old news? How long ago was this for it to become old news?? He thought, but decided not to question it further. He didn't seem to want to continue, anyway.
The two wolves spoke for almost half the day. They told jokes, laughed, made funny sound effects and a whole lot more. Storm felt at home. He had completely forgotten about the old den and his siblings. But at the same time, he didn’t want to think about it. He was enjoying this moment. But everything changed when Blayze asked him about his family, “so how’s life with three siblings?”
His smile melted. He tucked his ears into his fur, almost hiding them. He looked away to hide his tears, ”I… I don’t have any. They're dead.”
