"Kyran. Do you even realize what you've done?" My stepfather's voice boomed throughout the house as my mother stood silently between us all. Yashna was standing against the wall, looking very interested in the pink stain on the wall from when she was a child, and right now, I was the focus of attention.
"I wasn't in the right headspace." My response was literally just an excuse. There were to be no excuses allowed—why did the star player fail to score a single goal, and how the hell did he make those horrendous passes?
Who, or what was Kyran Drake's attention focused on? There was no way I was telling anyone about what actually happened. I had literally just screwed my chances at Notre Dame, and now—
"Kyran. This is your future. You get that, right?" I hated disappointing Will. Not just because he was my new stepfather but because I had to be grateful to this guy. He literally did everything I wanted. He treated me like his own son, when my own father packed his bags.
So, yeah. It felt like shit realizing I had wasted all his money and energy for nothing.
Fuck you, Avery.
My mom couldn't say anything because Will was right. He was. But I had a moment of weakness, too. If you looked at it like that, this conversation was...going nowhere. We both had truly valid points.
Isha was thankfully in her bedroom, and it was for the best. We didn't need her to listen to how her brother was a failure.
"Yeah. I just...I could've done better," I muttered stupidly as if this could somehow change everything. It couldn't. I knew that, and I just fucked up everything because I was staring at Avery Turner.
A drunken mistake? Yeah, it was. I shouldn't have trusted Caleb, and that was on me. I agreed to that. But I didn't have the time to deal with that situation, and think about my game as well. How the hell was I supposed to think about a million things at the same time?
I wasn't Avery Turner.
Stop thinking about her.
I swear to god—
"You've been distracted lately," Mom said finally. It was nice to hear her address it too, and standing in front of Will for so long wasn't making this any less awkward. "Is it a girl?"
"I—uh? No! Of course, not." Task failed, successfully.
"So, it is?" Mom asked, raising an eyebrow.
"No, it isn't. You know I don't do distractions," I said.
I caught Yashna's glare from the wall, and I was damn glad that Will and Mom weren't looking at her. One look at her face was enough to tell that yes, it was about a girl.
