Once she left my room and walked off into Yashna's, I felt awful. I could've had a chance to mend our friendship, and to be honest, it was nearly fine. I messed it up again, as usual.
I sat there for a while, ignoring my friends' calls that lit up my phone screen. The notifications suddenly became too hard for me to handle. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath.
Her look of shock, the judgment, those eyes. My god, those eyes and how they darkened at the sight of what she saw. She probably thought I was evil. I knew that of course. She was intelligent enough to figure out that what she saw down there was illegal.
It was ten p.m., and I knew that Yashna and Avery were probably asleep by now. But I found myself pacing around my room, silently wishing that I didn't mess everything up like I did just now. I opened the door quietly, knowing that Mom and Will were fast asleep downstairs.
Would she still be awake at this time?
As I tiptoed down the hallway toward Yashna's room, my heart pounded in my chest, and I found myself at a crossroads. Did I want to show this part of my life to Avery? I didn't, but she simply barged her way in without asking.
Now, I needed to give her an explanation.
I stopped at the door and hesitated. My hand was ready to knock, but something stopped me. However, I summoned the courage to gently tap on the door.
There was a minute of silence, broken only by the sound of my own erratic breathing before I heard the faint shuffle of movement from within the room. Then, to my surprise and relief, the door cracked open, revealing Avery with her black-rimmed glasses.
It didn't take a genius to realize that she was studying.
At ten p.m.
Avery blinked at me in surprise, her glasses slightly askew as she peered out from behind the partially open door. The glasses were seemingly too loose for her because they'd reached the top of her nose.
I resisted the urge to push them back.
"Kyran, what do you want? Yashna's asleep," she whispered and I swallowed hard, feeling a rush of nerves coursing through me as I struggled to find the right words.
"Hey, um. I'm not here for Yashna," I began, my voice coming out slightly hoarse. "I...I needed to talk to you."
She sighed. "And you couldn't wait till the morning?"
