I hopped out of my car and ran, and I mean literally ran into Al's, as fast as my legs could carry me. There was no way he was beating me again. I have no clue why it angered me so much, but Kai was actually working harder than even I was. He was there before me, there later than me, taking all the crappy shifts willingly, and the worst part? He looked like he was having fun. always. It pissed me off to no end when I walked in here to see him humming, or smiling, or waving at me.

Why was he so happy? What gave him the right to be so much more...cheery than the rest of the world. I had everything, so why was I always so miserable? Kai, this newcomer with the bad haircut and the converse, seemed to be settling in here so much better than I have, and I got a seventeen year head start.

I opened the door, and the bell rang above my head. To my pleasant surprise, I saw that I was the first one here- well, earlier than Kai anyways. Looks like waking up early had paid off.

"Hey Miriam!" I called out. She was the best cook in this whole town, if she bothered to try. Most times she just sat back there and read from her magazines till the fries were burnt and the burgers were saturated in grease. Still though, I loved her, she was like family to me.

A head popped out from behind the wall where the kitchen was, and my smile faded when I saw who it was. His stupid topaz eyes litterally seemed to sparkle at me from underneath that mop he called hair.

Damnit he was good.

"Oh, hey Melody! Just in time! Miriam's making me an omellette for breakfast, can you believe how nice she is?" He asked, smiling excitedly. In his hand was a donut, and in the other one a cheeseburger. Did he have to eat every meal like that? How was he not fat yet?

"That's nice of her." I mumbled as his stupid perfect face dissapeared again. I heard him laugh as I set out the salt and pepper shakers at all the tables. He was always laughing. It sounded so sweet, and honest. Probably the main reason everyone was falling for his stupid act.

I sighed, and sat down at the table I had been working on setting up. I don't know why I was being so distrustful of this guy, but I was. Maybe it was the fact that I had grown up with the most prejudiced parents and grandmother in the whole world, who knows. All that mattered was I was determined to not let Kai...whatever his last name was, get to me.

In fact, I would get to him. I would try and figure out if that smile was real, and if not, what he was hiding behind it. Because no one, could be that happy all the time.

I loved this job! I loved these people, and I loved this life. I clocked in early as usual, and noticed on the sheet that I had been working here for more than three weeks now. That meant, in total, I had been living in Littleview for about two months. Damn time goes by fast.

And I was wasting it. Life was only so long, and memories needed to last me the years when I'm too old and crippled to do much else besides think. I wanted to meet more people, have more laughs, bring this town together even more. I've noticed its the same people sitting in the same booths. Polite smiles exist between each other, but not much else. No substance in thier quick little chats walking in and out the door.

I looked around the diner and started brainstorming more things I could be doing with my life. Something fun, something...

"AL! I'M GOING ON BREAK NOW OKAY?" I shouted, scaring the bits out of Lucy who was right beside me. I turned to her and gave her a hug. "Sorry about that ma'am." She looked surprised that I'd done that, but then smiled. Old people weren't such tough cookies to crack after all!
