If murder wasn't illegal, I genuinely think this girl would be a serial killer. All she does is threaten me and glare at me. It's like a hobby.
We started off with Calculus, because that's where she's struggling the most. I've already given her the basics and solved a few questions in front of her, to show her the way to do it. She was staring at me the whole time like I'm talking gibberish or something. That's what I'm like when I try to learn science. So, I won't judge, everyone has their weak subjects.
I watch Layla play with the band around her wrist as she thinks of the answers to the questions I just gave her to solve on her own. Her expression is focused and concentrated.
She suddenly leans back in her chair with a loud groan, "This is impossible. I can't solve any of these. Give me easier ones."
"These are the easiest ones. You're not trying hard enough, try again." I say in a firm tone. She huffs in response, "You're obviously doing it wrong. It's not my fault. I was focused the whole time."
I rub my temples as I take a deep breath. Mon Dieu, donne-moi de la patience. "How did you not understand what I said? It's the easiest branch of maths. It's just rules and you apply them."
"Just rules— whoever said that is either the most genius person in the world or the dumbest one for believing that concept. And I want another iced coffee. I'm stressed, and your face stresses me even more." She waves a hand to Raj, signaling him that she wants to make another order.
Raj nods and comes over at our table, flipping his notepad and holding his pen to it. He looks like he's holding back a laugh. "I can see that the study session is going really smoothly. Are we having fun? Do we need more iced coffee?"
"First of all, I'm going to fail my finals at this rate. Never take maths in your life, please. Second of all, we need a gallon of that iced coffee. And for Louis, poison if you serve it here, because he's a psychopath for thinking this is easy." She rolls her eyes, flipping over the pages of the notebook in annoyance.
Raj giggles as he writes the safe part of the order down. I give him a scowl. He notices my expression, and clears his throat. "What? I like her, she's funny. I'll just bring you an espresso, bro. Minus the poison part." He winks at Layla before he goes.
Raj's shift should've ended an hour ago, but knowing Raj, he probably prolonged his shift so he could watch my misery here. He even skipped his favorite show—the one he argued about with me a million times saying he has to make it on time to watch it, to be here instead and mock me all about this later. I'm going to kill him.
I try to explain to Layla the parts she didn't understand again, this time in a different way. I glance at her every now and then to see if she's following or if I should stop and repeat again. I notice her determined expression on her face, like she's putting our differences aside to get better in this.
